BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — A man already given a life sentence for murder in Iowa has pleaded guilty to assaulting two guards in the Des Moines County Jail in Burlington. Court records show Jorge Sanders-Galvez, of St. Louis, entered pleas Tuesday to willful injury and to assault on a correctional officer. He’s scheduled to be sentenced Monday. Sanders-Galvez was given a life sentence for his role in killing a gender-fluid Burlington teenager, Kedarie Johnson.

The two officers were attacked Dec. 10 by Sanders-Galvez and two other inmates. Court records say the two other inmates, Earl Booth-Harris and Bobby Morris, also pleaded guilty. Each was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years. Booth-Harris is serving a life sentence in a different slaying.

State offers free fishing this upcoming weekend to get people hooked

Iowans who love to fish or who want to learn will be able to fish for free this coming weekend. The state is holding its annual opportunity to see what the fishing fuss is all about, according to Joe Larscheid, chief of the Iowa D-N-R Fisheries Bureau. “Currently in Iowa, anybody under 16 years old can fish for free but this allows all residents to try fishing for free,” Larscheid says.  The event runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Given the warm weather, Larscheid says the fish should be biting across the state. “It’s a great time to go fishing,” he says. “The crappies and the bluegills are close to shore, so there’s shore fishing and lakes and ponds and impoundments across Iowa should be very good this coming weekend.”

You don’t need to invest in expensive equipment to give the sport a whirl. “If you go to our Special Events Calendar on the DNR website, you can find events close to where you live,” Larscheid says. “At these events, there’s usually people there to help you fish, even provide fishing tackle, rods and reels to go fishing.”

A fishing license for Iowa residents costs $19 a year, which Larscheid says is a good bargain, as that pays for the state to stock 150-million fish every year, in addition to running the hatcheries and staffing biologists and enforcement personnel.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Waterloo officials have chosen a kombucha tea company over a brewery and bicycle business as the new occupant for a downtown development. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that City Council members unanimously voted Tuesday to approve a seven-year lease with Verve Kombucha. The company will operate a bistro and brewery for the fermented tea product in the RiverLoop Public Market Building.

The lease agreement says Verve will receive free rent for one year while it renovates the building. Rent will be $1,000 a month during the second year and increase to $4,000 in the seventh year. Lark Brewing Co. and Waterloo Bicycle Works had also submitted proposals to lease the facility. The city used a state grant to turn a lawn care building into the Public Market.

Summer programs help feed thousands of Iowa’s kids free lunches

News

May 30th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

As schools let out for the summer, tens of thousands of children could lose the free meals they eat each weekday, though sites across Iowa are gearing up to offer free lunches. Schools, libraries, community centers and other groups can apply through the Iowa Department of Education to sponsor the week-day meals. Ann Feilmann from the Bureau of Nutrition and Health Services, says some places get creative to feed as many kids as possible. In Davis County last year, she says a bus driver brought meals to rural children in a converted truck. “The kids were so excited to see him come,” Feilmann says, “and they also connected with a book program where they were able to get books to give out.”

Feilmann says Sioux City is adding a bus this year. Last June, Feilmann says more than 25-thousand children ate daily at community meal sites, adding, it’s not just for kids who are eligible for free-lunch during the school year. “There are also households where both parents are working and there’s not someone that has high cooking skills, plus it’s also a place to go and socialize with friends,” she says.

All kids are welcome. Communities throughout the state provide meals to children thanks to the federal Summer Food Service Program.
