Winter Weather Advisory expanded to include Cass & area counties

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR PARTS OF THE KJAN LISTENING AREA UNTIL MIDNIGHT, HAS BEEN EXPANDED TO INCLUDE: CASS, ADAIR, ADAMS, GUTHRIE, UNION, TAYLOR AND RINGGOLD COUNTIES. PREVIOUSLY, DALLAS AND MADISON COUNTIES WERE IN THE ADVISORY ALSO.

A wintry mix of mainly sleet and snow will affect areas east of Interstate 35 late this afternoon as it gradually moves off to the east, bringing a continued threat of slick and hazardous road conditions to those areas during the afternoon commute. Freezing drizzle will then develop across much of the advisory area by this evening into tonight, potentially creating icy and treacherous road conditions at times.

If you are planning travel for New Years Eve please check the latest updates and road conditions before venturing out. Finally, much colder air and gusty north northwest winds will surge into Iowa tonight and Tuesday, bringing the coldest air of the winter so far with wind chills approaching -20 degrees in northwest Iowa.

Monday (New Year’s Eve day): Patchy fog. A 40% chance mixed precipitation (drizzle, snow & freezing drizzle). High near 34. Winds N/NW @ 10-20 mph w/gusts to near 25. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

New Year’s Eve (Monday Night): Patchy snow and freezing drizzle before 11pm, then a chance of snow. Patchy fog before midnight as well, otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 8.  Winds N/NW @ 15-30 mph. Wind chill values as low as -5. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

New Year’s Day: Partly sunny & blustery. High near 14. N/NW @ 10-25 mph.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 4.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 27.

Saturday’s daytime High was 18 (our 24-hour High ending at 7-a.m. today was 21. We received .1″ snow yesterday, which amounted to just a trace of liquid precipitation. Our Low for the past 24-hours was 6.

Last year on this date our High was 2 and the Low was -19. The record High in Atlantic on this date was 64 in 2004. The Record Low was -22 in 1917.

Tonight: Clear, with a low around 18. Wind chill values as low as 5. South southwest wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 41. Wind chill values as low as 10. Breezy, with a south southwest wind 13 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 26. South southwest wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

Monday: A slight chance of freezing drizzle between noon and 5pm, then a slight chance of snow after 5pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32. Windy. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

New Year’s Day: Mostly sunny, with a high near 15. Blustery.

Yesterday’s High in Atlantic was 20. Our Low this morning was 4. We received a glaze of freezing mist yesterday, and .3” of snow. The ice and snow melted into just .01” liquid precipitation. Last year on this date our High was 16 and the Low was 1. The record High in Atlantic on this date was 60 in 1984. The Record Low was -22 in 1917.

Law Enforcement warns of 100% ice covered roads in Atlantic & Cass County

The Cass County Communications center is warning roads in Atlantic and around the County are 100-percent ice covered due to the freezing drizzle. County road crews had not been out as of 5:30-a.m. to treat teh roads. Streets and intersections in Atlantic are also extremely slick. Allow yourself plenty of extra space to stop before you reach an intersection.

DAY ONE…Today and tonight: Light snow is possible through this evening. A brief period of light freezing drizzle cannot be ruled out this morning. Minor snow accumulation is expected and should freezing drizzle occur, a light glaze is possible. Roads in the area were very slick (as of 5-a.m.), with freezing drizzle observed.

DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN…Saturday through Thursday: A wintry mix is possible Monday into Tuesday. At this time only minor snow and ice accumulations are expected with little impact to travel. It will become sharply colder early next week. In addition to the cold, a strong and gust northwest wind could drive wind chills to 5 to 15 below zero.

DAY ONE…Today and Tonight: A little light snow and flurries will continue today with any accumulations less than an inch. There may be some reduced visibilities due to the gusty northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 6. Wind chill values as low as -5. Blustery, with a north northwest wind 7 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 23. Wind chill values as low as -5. Light and variable wind becoming southwest 5 to 9 mph in the morning.
Saturday Night: Clear, with a low around 17. South southwest wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.
Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 39. Breezy.

Last year on this date our High was 19 and the Low was 3. The record High in Atlantic on this date was 65 in 1984. The Record Low was -25 in 1924.

Heavy snow, whiteout conditions reported in Nebraska

Heavy snowfall and blizzardlike conditions are being reported as a powerful winter storm moves through the middle of Nebraska. The Nebraska Transportation Department closed Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 30 in both directions Thursday morning, from Lexington to North Platte. It cited whiteout and other weather factors. The National Weather Service has posted blizzard or winter storm warnings for several counties. Most of the warnings are scheduled to expire by Friday morning. Six inches of snow was reported in Cozad and Elwood.
