IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery announced on Monday that Belmont transfer and Iowa City native Even Brauns (pronounced Evan) has signed with the University of Iowa.

Moss showed the ability to make big plays for the Hawkeyes. He returned three interceptions for touchdowns his junior season.

Northern Iowa softball prepares for Missouri Valley Tournament

Sports

May 8th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

Northern Iowa softball coach Ryan Jacobs believes the Panthers will need to win the Missouri Valley Tournament this week in Carbondale, Illinois to get into the NCAA Tournament. The regular season champion Panthers will enter the tournament with a 38-11 record and riding a school record 17 game winning streak after Sunday’s 9-1 win over Evansville. Jacobs says more early wins in non-conference play would have boosted their at-large chances.

Jacobs says their fate remains in their own hands. The winner of the Valley tournament receives an automatic bid.

The Panthers open in the quarterfinal round on Thursday morning and play the winner of Wednesday’s game between Drake and Evansville.

Racing and Gaming trying again on horse racing study

News, Sports

May 8th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – State regulators are starting over on a study of the horse racing industry. Racing and Gaming Administrator Brian Ohorilko says they only received one response to their original request for a proposal to do a study, and are going to try again.”The commission staff will be working with the Department of Administrative services to to initiate another R-F-P to study the horse racing industry, and really to try to assist with promoting the health and sustainability of the industry,” he says. The Racing and Gaming Commission decided upon the study in September of last year, and Ohorilko says they are hoping to find more applicants to do the study.

“The commission will be reaching out to a number of prospective individuals, that may be interested in hopes that people will put in bids and we’ll have some good options to choose from later this summer, when the selections are made,” Ohorilko says. Ohorilko says they are looking for a comprehensive study. “A study like this does take time and requires a lot of interviews, a lot of data. And so it is quite possible that the work will take place over the course of 12 to 14 months,” Ohorilko says. “And so if the study is initiated right now, I think the commission will be looking for results in late summer, or fall of 2024.”

Ohorilko says there are a lot of different opinions now on the state of the horse racing industry in Iowa, and that’s why the Commission decided to conduct a study to get an outside view.

Don’t go fishing in Iowa without one of these

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

May 8th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Warmer weather is finally here and Iowans who love to fish are getting out on — or beside — their favorite bodies of water, casting lines and seeing what they can catch. Nate Carr, a state D-N-R conservation officer from Eldora, says besides your fishing pole and the tackle box, there’s one other important thing you should bring along. “If you’re 16 or older and you’re fishing in public water, you’re required to have a fishing license,” Carr says.

“All that goes to help promote and manage the fisheries that we do have. There’s a lot of work from our fisheries bureau that goes towards surveying lakes, trying to understand how our population is doing, and how to best manage that body of water.” Fishing regulations do change from year to year, and Carr says you’ll want to keep up or risk getting a fine.

“Depending on where you’re fishing, length limits and daily limits, you may see some differences whether you’re fishing in the river or a lake,” Carr says. “So it’s a good idea to find yourself a fishing reg booklet for 2023.” He says you don’t need to look far to get the full rundown of state fishing regulations. “Honestly, one of the easiest ways to come across that is, just to go on our website — iowadnr.gov — and you can search ‘fishing regs’ and download a copy to your phone or your laptop or whatever you have handy,” he says.

The annual Iowa Free Fishing Weekend is scheduled for June 2nd through the 4th.

Iowa’s Rick Heller reaches milestone with 15-3 win over Ohio State, Saturday

Sports

May 8th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

Iowa baseball coach Rick Heller reached a milestone with 15-3 win over Ohio State on Saturday. It was Heller’s 1,000th career victory. He is in his 36th season as a head coach in a career that began at Upper Iowa and has also included stops at Northern Iowa and Indiana State.

Heller knew as a 12-year-old he wanted to be a coach.

Heller says his career has flown by.

Heller became the head coach at Upper Iowa in 1988, two years after his playing career with the Peacocks ended.

The Hawkeyes are 10-7 in the Big Ten and 34-12 overall. They lost to Ohio State on Sunday, 2-5, and a chance to sweep the series.
