J.T. Poston is set to defend his title at the John Deere Classic this week. Poston’s win last year was his second on the PGA Tour and he is looking forward to competing in the Quad Cities as the defending champ.

Poston has three top ten finishes this season but most recently missed the cut at the Travelers Championship.

Poston’s first win on the PGA Tour was back in 2019 at the Wyndham Championship.

It will also be a much different experience being the defending champ in the Quad Cities.

The first round of the John Deere Classic is Thursday.

Women’s basketball season tickets for new customers will be priced at $195 for adults; $160 for faculty/staff and senior citizens; and $75 for youth (age 18-and-under). The renewal price will be $175 for adults; $140 for faculty/staff and senior citizens; and $60 for youth.

Fans who renew or purchase UI women’s basketball season tickets have the exclusive option to purchase a long-sleeve shirt for $15 at ticket checkout.

The UI women’s basketball team is coming off a historic season in which it won a school-record 31 games, finished NCAA national runners-up and was second in the country in attendance. Senior guard Caitlin Clark, who was the consensus National Player of the Year and Collegiate Woman of the Year, averaged 27.8 points, 8.6 assists and 7.1 rebounds per game. Seniors Gabbie Marshall and Kate Martin, and sophomore Hannah Stuelke also return for Lisa Bluder’s 24th season as Iowa’s head coach.

The UI men’s basketball team is one of just 10 teams in the country to compete in the last four NCAA Tournaments. Head Coach Fran McCaffery returns four players with starting experience, including seniors Patrick McCaffery and Tony Perkins, junior Payton Sandfort and sophomore Dasonte Bowen. Perkins was an honorable mention all-conference honoree while Sandfort was the Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year in 2023. Iowa ranked 24th in the country in attendance a year ago, marking the 10th straight season (with fans) that Iowa has ranked in the top 30 nationally.

A special Senior Night for Lake Mills baseball

Sports

June 30th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Following Lake Mills’ senior night game Wednesday might against Forest City, over 100 people gathered behind the backstop to watch Coach Joel Koch and Shana Rogstad get their heads shaved. Caycee Barrett came to the plate in the sixth innings of Lake Mills’ loss to Forest City to a large applause from both fans wearing purple and gold and red and white. Barrett, a senior on the Lake Mills baseball team, was playing in his final regular season game as a Bulldog. Wearing his black number five jersey, Barrett strolled to the plate for an at-bat against Forest City sophomore James Hagen, despite his diagnosis of Ewing Sarcoma, a form of bone cancer, earlier this year.

Koch and his wife, Jenny, came up with the idea to start a GoFundMe for Caycee and posted it on social media, stating that if they raised two thousand dollars, Coach Koch would allow Barrett to shave his head on a senior night. Well, the Lake Mills community didn’t take long to respond. Within a few hours, the two-thousand-dollar mark was reached, and the plan was set in motion.

Community member Shana Rogstad announced earlier this month that if the donation totals exceed 15,000 dollars, she, too, would let Caycee shave her head. The Lake Mills and surrounding communities responded, surpassing the 15k threshold, and Rogstad held up her end of the deal, taking a seat on the bucket.

Iowa’s Caitlin Clark on handling a busy summer

Sports

June 29th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa star Caitlin Clark says time management has been the key as she mixes in basketball workouts with public appearances. The national player of the year was in Los Angeles this week to accept the Honda Award as the nation’s top female college athlete and next week will be in the Quad Cities to play golf in the Pro-Am leading up to the John Deere Classic. Clark says she enjoys being busy even with the demands on her time.

Clark says she is trying to soak it all in.

Clark says her family has been very supportive.

Clark was named the Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year on Thursday.

Trojan baseball falls short of comeback against Red Oak

Sports

June 29th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The Trojan Baseball team lost 5-4 at home tonight against the Red Oak Tigers. In the top of the first Red Oak scored 3 runs from an RBI single thanks to Dawson Bond and a 2RBI double from Braden Woods. The game was 3-0 then.  The Trojans responded in the second with a sacrifice fly from Clevi Johnson making it 3-1. The batting action fizzled out and eyes were turned to the pitchers.

Jayden Proehl pitched a full 7 innings, had 4 earned runs, 8 hits, and 5 strikeouts. Proehl retired 12 straight batters heading into the sixth. The next two innings had Red Oak scoring 2 runs and they led 5-1 as the bottom of the seventh started.

There with bases loaded and 2 outs Easton O’Brien crushed a deep double having all three baserunners come home. The game suddenly turned 5-4 and the Trojans had a chance at coming back. It would end with the next batter hitting a line fly towards center and the ball being caught by Landon Cowse. The Tigers left Atlantic with a win.

After the game Coach Schilling discussed the changes that needed to be made and the effective staff that Red Oak has.

The next game for the Trojans is senior night and Coach Schilling is proud of this year seniors.

Red Oak is now (14-12) with a win and their next game is on Wednesday July 5th against either Missouri Valley or Treynor. The Trojans sit at (10-14) and will play Council Bluffs Jefferson on Monday July 3rd at home.

Iowa’s Deontae Craig talks summer workouts

Sports

June 29th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Deontae Craig could be the next break-out star on Iowa’s defensive line. The junior steps in at the defensive end spot vacated By Green Bay Packer rookie Lukas Van Ness. In 13 games last season Craig tied for the team lead with six and-a-half sacks. He has the potential to be Iowa’s best playmaker on the defensive front.

Craig also had 10 tackles for a loss and forced three fumbles. He feels that experience will help him this season.

The Hawkeyes open September second at home against Utah State.
