Atlantic had two place-winners: Brooke Newell was 5th with a round of 80, Erin Olsen was 8th with an 86. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs’ appeal of anti-tampering violations has been denied by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, meaning Kansas City will forfeit its third-round draft pick this year and sixth-round pick next year. The club did have its fine reduced from $250,000 to $200,000 on Monday, while coach Andy Reid’s fine was reduced from $75,000 to $60,000.
Team owner Clark Hunt said in a statement the Chiefs “continue to believe that the facts of this case combined with the league’s inconsistent enforcement of its tampering policies do not warrant the most severe penalty for player-related tampering in league history.”
The violations stem from the Chiefs contacting then-free agent wide receiver Jeremy Maclin when prohibited by NFL rules. Maclin, who had been drafted by Reid in Philadelphia, eventually signed with Kansas City.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — John Lackey struck out 11 in seven innings of four-hit ball against his former team and had an RBI single, leading the Chicago Cubs over the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0 Monday night. Jayson Heyward, playing at Busch Stadium for the first time since leaving to sign with Chicago, was 0 for 4 at the plate, made two nice catches in right field and was booed throughout.
Dexter Fowler homered for the second time in three days for the Cubs, a major league-best 10-3 and off to their best start since 1970. Chicago has won 15 of its last 16 regular-season road games, going 6-1 this year.
The Atlantic Parks and Recreation Department has completed the Vision Iowa CAT grant application and turned it in by last Friday’s deadline. The application seeks $360,000 for improvements to the Schildberg Recreation Area campsite and related matters. Assistant Parks and Rec Director Seth Staashelm said during Monday’s meeting of the Parks and Recreation Dept. Board, that Director Roger Herring burned the midnight oil last week putting together a thick binder full of information. He says they hope to hear something back in the next month or two.
A 5-minute dvd virtual tour of the Schildberg Rec Area was included in the application. The video was shot by a drone under the guidance of Wastewater Treatment Plant Manager Tim Snyder. Staashelm added the c-g graphics and special effects. Herring said he hopes the Vision Iowa judges take a moment to view the dvd and note that the intent is to make Atlantic a “Destination Point,” which will in-turn benefit the County in the form of tourism. Parks and Rec Board member Charlene Beane suggested the video be included on the Chamber’s website.
In other business, the Parks and Rec Board Monday evening gave the go-ahead for the purchase of an interlocking basketball court surface at the Harl-Holt park. The low bid was from Versa Court, at $13,806. Seth Staashelm said a grant will help to pay for new court surface, which will come with pre-printed, versatile lines for different sporting activities. It’s much safer to use than hard surfaces, and only requires assembly, a job which the parks and rec crew will be able to handle, thereby saving on costs.
The surface has a 10-year warranty. And, costs for the summer recreation programs in Atlantic, including youth tennis, swim team and men’s slow pitch softball, are unchanged. New this year, is Adult Tennis, Pickleball and Sunnyside Activity Hour.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Shortstop Ruben Tejada has been activated from the 15-day disabled list by the St. Louis Cardinals after recording from a strained left quadriceps that he hurt in the last game of spring training on March 31.
Infielder Greg Garcia was optioned to Triple-A Memphis after Sunday’s victory over Cincinnati.
The 26-year-old Tejada figured to be the starter in place of Jhonny Peralta, who is recovering from surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb. Rookie Aledmys Diaz and Jedd Gyorko have both played well, in the field at the plate, and Garcia also started at shortstop.
St. Louis signed Tejada on March 19 after he was released by the New York Mets. In three injury rehabilitation games with Double-A Springfield last week he was 3 for 9 with a double.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Former Iowa State basketball star Nikki Moody is suing coach Bill Fennelly, the university and the state for racial discrimination and retaliation.
A lawsuit in state district court says that Fennelly, who has been Iowa State’s coach since 1995, constantly demeaned, berated, harassed and discriminated against Moody, who is black. Moody said the discrimination she suffered led to a “hostile education environment through racial harassment.”
Moody, who graduated in 2015 as a four-year starter and the career leader in assists for the Cyclones, said the abuse caused her severe emotional distress, adding that her complaints to assistant coaches and a senior athletics administrator weren’t responded to.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. The university did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – An Iowa native is enjoying being part of the Milwaukee Brewers’ radio broadcast team. The Sioux City Journal reports Lane Grindle traded his job broadcasting the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s sports teams for the big leagues this spring.
Grindle says it hasn’t taken him long to become a Brewers fan despite growing up in Kansas City Royals territory in Hastings, Iowa, and attending running track at the University of South Dakota. Grindle now gets the chance to work with Hall of Famer Bob Uecker, and he’ll calls the Brewers’ road games when Uecker doesn’t travel.
One of Grindle’s first bosses, Kevin Culhane, says he knew Grindle always had a passion for sports and sports reporting, so he wasn’t surprised to hear about Grindle’s latest promotion.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Eric Fryer had three hits, including the go-ahead double with two outs in the eighth inning that led the St. Louis Cardinals over the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 Sunday. A backup to All-Star catcher Yadier Molina, Fryer got his first start this season and is 6 for 6 at the plate.
Matt Carpenter and Jedd Gyorko hit solo homers for St. Louis, which has won three of last four. Ten of the Cardinals’ 21 homers this season were hit in the three-game series against the Reds, who have lost five of six.
Kevin Siegrist (2-0) entered with a runner at second and two outs in the seventh, struck out Zack Cozart and pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, fanning two more. Trevor Rosenthal struck out his last two batters in a perfect ninth for his third save in as many chances.
