In area boys golf action, the AHSTW Vikings came away with a home victory over Riverside. The Vikes won with the best low team score of 183. The Bulldogs racked-up a score of 206. Riverside’s Tyler Krueger shot a 39, which gave him the Medalist title. Dustin Engel earned the runner-up score with a round of 44 for AHSTW.

In girls action at AHSTW, the home team shot a total round of 221. Riverside failed to qualify a team score. The Bulldog’s Alyssa Brink won medalist with her round of 50, while Taylor Madden 54 led AHSTW with a score of 54, which was good for the runner-up position.

In a Western Iowa Conference boys dual golf meet, Friday, Treynor bested Audubon 176-211 at the Treynor Recreation Area. Nathan Hill led the Cardinals with a best score of 35. Micky Williamson shot the low round for Audubon, at 52.

In a track and field event held in Creston, the Atlantic Trojans were victorious in the Creston Panther Relays, with three event wins under their belt and a total score of 108.5 points. First place finishes for Atlantic included those from Alec Hayes in the High Jump, Gratt Reed in the 110M High Hurdles, and Phoenix Shadden in the 3,200. In second place team scoring, was North Polk, with 104.5. Third place went to Clarinda, with 80 points. Harlan’s score of 68.5 was good enough for fourth place, while Earlham placed 5^th, with 53 points. Rounding out the rest of the 10 team field, in 6^th thru tenth places respectively, was Shenandoah, Mt. Ayr, Creston, Nishnabotna, and Red Oak.

At the Eagle Relays in Underwood, the home squad defended their turf with 118 total points. Treynor was a distant second with 67 points. Logan-Magnolia was third with 64, followed by St. Albert (60.5), West Central Valley (55), Griswold (53), Woodbine (50), Fremont-Mills (49.5) and Thomas Jefferson (49) in the 16-team meet.

At the Glidden-Ralston Co-Ed meet in Carroll, the Audubon boys and Coon Rapids-Bayard girls were winners in team scoring. The Audubon boys racked-up 169 points. Coon Rapids-Bayard placed 2nd with 110 points. Glidden-Ralston was third with 108 points, followed by Ar-We-Va (90) and Guthrie Center (69) to round out the top five in the eight-team meet.

And, at the East Sac County Raider Relays in Wall Lake, the IKM-Manning girls finished second while the boys were fifth.

Oskaloosa–Brooke Fletcher (So., Atlantic, Iowa, Business Management) picked up a links title last week and her performance netted her Heart of America Athletic Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week honors Monday.

Fletcher earned her first weekly accolade by topping the 55-player field at the Mike “Fluff” Cowan Intercollegiate hosted by William Penn with a 161 (81-80).  The sophomore, who was playing for WPU’s second team, won the event by two strokes; the 161 is the lowest two-day score of her career.

Fletcher’s title is her first at the collegiate level.  She currently owns an 83.9 stroke average over 16 rounds, highlighted by a career best of 78.

The award is the fourth of the year for the program.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have activated utility player Javier Baez from the disabled list and optioned infielder Munenori Kawasaki to Triple-A Iowa. Today’s (Friday’s) moves come after Baez went 4 for 15 while playing four positions in a four-game rehab stint with Iowa. Baez injured his left thumb while sliding headfirst into first base during a spring training game, limiting him to 30 at-bats in exhibition games.

Baez might play some left field with Kyle Schwarber out for the season with torn knee ligaments. Baez was the ninth overall pick in the 2011 draft. He has 10 home runs and 119 strikeouts in 80 major league games over the past two seasons.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa powerbroker Bruce Rastetter has long used his $5 million pledge to Hawkeye football to build his image as a successful businessman and philanthropist. But years after his 2008 commitment was touted as the largest gift to Iowa athletics, Rastetter has given less than a third of that amount. Another donor who promised $5 million that day has completed his pledge. The football complex they were supporting has been built.

Rastetter is now president of the school’s governing body. His handling of the donation contradicts public statements claiming he’s given $5 million, which he’s used to deflect criticism that his policies hurt the university. And it raises questions about whether the delay was part of the pressure he put on former university president Sally Mason, who resigned last year.
