PGA Tour Champions offers Daly fresh start

Sports

May 4th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The newest member of PGA Tour Champions says he is just happy he made it to the age of 50. John Daly has been a crowd favorite since he shocked the golf world in 1991 by winning the PGA Championship after driving to the tournament as an alternate. He added a British Open title in 1995. Daly will play the Principal Charity Classic in Des Moines next month and says the Tour Champions has given a new start to a career that has featured more off the course troubles than wins.

Daly will debut on the senior circuit this week in Houston but he is not guaranteeing instant success. Through all of his difficulties Daly has remained a popular figure and always draws a lot of fans wherever he plays.

The Principal Charity Classic in June 3-5 at the Wakonda Club in Des Moines.

Chiefs cut safety Wilson, linebacker Gordon to create space

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs waived safety Jimmy Wilson and linebacker Cameron Gordon on Tuesday as they massaged their roster following the NFL draft and the signing of undrafted free agents. Kansas City selected three defensive backs and a linebacker during last weekend’s draft.

Wilson signed a $4.85 million, two-year contract with San Diego last year, but was cut in December after making just six starts. He was signed by Kansas City this offseason to provide depth at safety following the surprising retirement of Husain Abdullah.

Gordon signed a futures contract with the Chiefs in January. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Patriots two years ago.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Aaron Nola threw seven innings and Ryan Howard homered to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 1-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night. Philadelphia has won seven of eight while St. Louis has lost five of six.

Jeanmar Gomez recorded his ninth save in as many opportunities after Hector Neris struck out the side in the eighth inning. Nola (2-2) allowed two hits and struck out seven in an 111-pitch stint. He has a string of 20 consecutive scoreless innings dating to April 22. Nola, who retired the last 10 batters, has given up one run or fewer in four of six starts this season.

Howard, a St. Louis native, drilled a first-pitch offering from Michael Wacha (2-2) over the wall in right in the sixth inning. He has 22 homers in 66 games against St. Louis and has 12 homers in 36 games at Busch Stadium.
