Iowa college standouts await NFL Draft

Sports

April 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Northern Iowa safety Deiondre’ Hall is the highest rated Iowa college player heading into tonight’s (Thursday night’s) start of the NFL Draft in Chicago. Hall was the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a senior and is ranked as the eighth best safety in the draft according to CBSsports.com.

Hall is one of two Panthers who are projected to be taken in the draft. If both get drafted it would be the second year in a row that UNI had two players selected in the draft. Hall and Makinton Dorleant hope to join the ever growing list of former UNI players who made it to the NFL.

Iowa tight end Henry Krieger-Coble and center Austin Blythe are projected as sixth or seventh round selections.

Cardinals bash past Diamondbacks 11-4

Sports

April 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

PHOENIX (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched into the sixth inning for his first win and hit a three-run triple in St. Louis’ fifth straight offensive outburst, lifting the Cardinals to an 11-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday night. St. Louis scored 18 combined runs in two games to close out a sweep over San Diego and had 15 in splitting the first two against Arizona.

The Cardinals kept bashing, knocking around Patrick Corbin (1-3) and finishing with 14 hits, four by Stephen Piscotty. Aledmys Diaz homered, scored three runs and had two RBIs for the Cardinals, who have won four of five. Piscotty, Matt Carpenter and Matt Holiday also drove in two runs each.

Wainwright (1-3) gave up homers to Brandon Drury and Paul Goldschmidt but ended his worst start since 2012 behind the Cardinals’ big run support.

Weather concerns cloud Drake Relays

Sports

April 27th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The biggest unknown for the annual Drake Relays has always been the weather. Conditions could be a big factor this year — especially with every athlete’s training geared toward making and then peaking at the Rio Olympics.

Drake has lined up stars like LaShawn Merritt, Kirani James, Jenny Simpson and Brittney Reese to compete in this year’s meet, which starts in earnest Thursday and runs through Saturday. But the forecast calls for rain on Saturday, which could lead to athletes deciding to pull out rather than risk an injury that would keep them out of a trip to Rio.

Hunter apprentice program moves forward

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

April 27th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources recently held a public hearing on the rules covering the new apprentice hunting licenses and are moving ahead with implementation. D-N-R hunter education administrator, Megan Wisecup, says it allows people to bypass the hunter education requirement while they learn. She says the program is for people over the age of 16 to try and get them interested in hunting by giving them a chance to go out before they need to invest in any equipment. Providing supervision is a key part of the apprentice license.

“It requires that they have a mentor with them, which is another hunter who is 18 or over and properly licensed as well. And they must maintain direct supervision between that mentor and menteee,” Wisecup says. She says once someone learns more about hunting, they are more likely to continue going out. “There’s 36 states that currently an apprentice license of some sort in place and they’ve attributed over one million new hunters coming into the fold since those programs went out. So, definitely once they have the opportunity to try it, they get hooked and then they come back and meet the hunter education requirements and successfully hunt on their own,” Wisecup says.

She says they already have thousands of people signed up for the hunter safety courses and hope this program brings in more. “There’s around 10 to 12-thousand that kind of fit in that age group that we are trying to reach out to, so we are kind of hoping we might double or triple that number,” Wisecup says. A person may purchase the apprentice hunting licenses two times without having completed hunter education course.

The apprentice program was approved by the Iowa legislature and signed by Governor Terry Branstad during the 2015 legislative session.
