ST. LOUIS, Mo., June 19, 2016 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to Sunday’s game that they have activated right-handed pitcher Seth Maness from the 15-day disabled list (right elbow inflammation) and optioned left-handed pitcher Dean Kiekhefer to Memphis (AAA).

Maness , 27, went on the disabled list May 13 after going 0-1 with a 6.39 ERA in 13 games (12.2 IP) to begin the season.   He combined to go 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five games (5.0 IP) with Memphis (AAA) and Springfield (AA) during his injury rehabilitation assignment.   He pitched a scoreless inning last Thursday (June 16) at Nashville in his most recent appearance.

Kiekhefer, a rookie, was 0-0 with a 5.73 ERA in 11 games (11.0 IP) with St. Louis.

Nice start: Chanticleers stun No. 1 Florida 2-1 in CWS debut

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Andrew Beckwith matched his career high with seven strikeouts, Zach Remillard doubled and tripled in runs, and Coastal Carolina upset No. 1 national seed Florida 2-1 on Sunday night in the program’s first College World Series game.

The Chanticleers of the Big South Conference pulled the stunner against the vaunted Florida pitching staff that sent to the mound two first-round picks, a second-rounder, third-rounder and 10th-rounder.

Beckwith (13-1), never drafted, put on a dazzling and efficient performance mixing sidearm and overhand deliveries. The Gators’ only run came on Jeremy Vasquez’s pinch single in the fifth. Beckwith allowed two singles the rest of the way and retired the last 10 batters in the first complete game of his career.

He set down the Gators’ 3-4-5 batters in the bottom of the ninth. Peter Alonso popped out and JJ Schwarz grounded out. That prompted the Chanticleers’ fans to start chanting “C-C-U! C-C-U!” and “Let’s go Coastal!” before Mike Rivera grounded out, with shortstop Michael Paez double-pumping on his throw to first.

The biggest victory in Coastal Carolina’s history comes in the third stage of its incredible postseason run. The Chanticleers beat host North Carolina State in the regional final and swept No. 8 national seed LSU on the road in super regionals to advance to Omaha.

TCU beats Texas Tech 5-3 at CWS on Baker’s 9th-inning homer

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Luken Baker hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the ninth and TCU beat No. 5 national seed Texas Tech 5-3 on Sunday in a College World Series meeting of Big 12 rivals. The Horned Frogs (48-16) trailed by a run after Hunter Hargrove’s tiebreaking double in the bottom of the eighth. But after reliever Robert Dugger issued a walk to start the ninth and gave up a single to Evan Skoug, Baker sent a towering shot just inside the left-field foul pole into the seats above the bullpen.

Freshman closer Durbin Feltman came on and pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save. TCU, in the CWS for the third straight year, will play a Bracket 2 winners’ game Tuesday night against the winner of Sunday night’s game between Coastal Carolina and No. 1 Florida. The Red Raiders (46-19), who went 0-2 in 2014 in their only other CWS appearance, will try to stay alive against the Coastal Carolina-Florida loser on Tuesday afternoon.

Cam Warner homered for the third time in the NCAA Tournament and sixth time this season to put TCU up 2-1 in the fifth, but Tanner Gardner doubled in a run in the bottom half to tie it.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jurickson Profar hit a two-run, bases-loaded pinch-hit single in the eighth, lifting the Texas Rangers to a 5-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. It was Profar’s first pinch-hit at-bat this season.

Texas swept the three-game series and has won six in a row and eight of its last nine games. The Rangers are 14-4 this month and they improved to an MLB best 16-4 in one-run games this season. St. Louis has lost five in a row — all at home. It was the first winless homestand of at least two series for St. Louis since 1983.

With two outs in the eighth, Rougned Odor doubled off reliever Matt Bowman (1-2). An intentional walk and a fielder’s choice loaded the bases. Profar hit for reliever Tony Barnette. Batting left-handed, Profar lined a 2-2 pitch into left to drive in the winning runs. Barnette (4-2) pitched 1 2/3 innings in scoreless relief for the win. Sam Dyson pitched the ninth for his 13th save in 14 chances.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Sam Hornish Jr. led 183 of 250 laps in his first race of 2016 and cruised to victory in Sunday’s NASCAR Xfinity race at the Iowa Speedway. Hornish, driving the No. 18 car for Joe Gibbs Racing, picked up his first win in two years — which also came at Iowa’s 0.875-mile oval.

Hornish was briefly pushed by Ty Dillon and Brad Keselowski on a restart with 27 laps to go. But Hornish held on to the outside groove for his fourth career Xfinity series win. Dillon was second, followed by Keselowski, Daniel Suarez and Alex Bowman. Pole sitter Erik Jones had issues with the No. 20 car all afternoon. He finished 27th.

Pham injured his oblique on opening day. He was hitting a combined .250 with four home runs and 19 RBIs in 37 games with Memphis and Double-A Springfield. Grichuk was hitting .206 with eight homers and 27 RBI in 62 games for St. Louis this season.

Also on Saturday the Cardinals signed right-handed pitcher Dakota Hudson, their third first round draft pick (34th overall) from the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

The Cardinals have now signed 27 of their 42 draft picks including 10 of 12 players selected in the Top 10 rounds and four non-drafted free agents.  Two pitchers, RHP Connor Jones from Virginia and RHP Zac Gallen from North Carolina, remain as the only players from the Cardinals Top 10 rounds yet to sign.
