Cardinals hit 3 homers in 9th, top Pirates 9-7

Sports

September 7th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Matt Carpenter, Randal Grichuk and Jhonny Peralta all homered off closer Tony Watson with two outs in the ninth inning, helping the St. Louis Cardinals rally past the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-7 on Tuesday night. The Cardinals were down to their last strike when Carpenter sent a long drive to right-center to tie it 6-6. Grichuk followed two batters later with a two-run shot off Watson (2-4), and Peralta piled on with a solo homer as St. Louis held on to the second wild card in the NL.

Carpenter’s homer was the 15th by a St. Louis pinch-hitter this season, a major league record. Yadier Molina went 4 for 5, including a first-inning grand slam. Mike Mayers (1-1) tossed a scoreless eighth for the win, and Seung-Hwan Oh worked around a solo homer to Jung Ho Kang in the ninth for his 16th save.

Kirk Ferentz re-signs with Iowa through 2025 season

Sports

September 6th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa has signed coach Kirk Ferentz to a six-year contract extension through the 2025 season. Ferentz, who is in his 18th season leading the Hawkeyes, will see his salary jump to $4.5 million per year under the new deal announced Tuesday.

Ferentz’s last contract, which was for 10 years at roughly $40 million, was set to expire in 2020. Ferentz’s massive buyout was subject to scrutiny under his previous deal, but a 12-2 season capped with a trip to the Rose Bowl quieted that talk.

Ferentz and Oklahoma’ Bob Stoops are the nation’s longest-tenured coaches, having been hired within days of each other in 1999.

Iowa’s youth deer season begins September 17

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

September 6th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa deer hunting tradition will be passed on to about 10,000 youths who are participating in the youth deer hunting season, which opens on Sept. 17. This season provides an opportunity to teach deer hunting, wildlife behavior, and safe hunting practices to resident youths while they are under the watchful eye of a licensed adult.

For many young hunters, this will be their first experience hunting deer, and mentors are encouraged to take the needs of the new hunter into account when planning the hunt. The goal of the hunt should be a positive, enjoyable, and ethical experience, and harvesting a deer should be considered a bonus, not define the success of the hunt.

The youth season coincides with the disabled hunter deer season for hunters who meet certain criteria. Each season runs September 17 through October 2. Each youth must be under direct supervision of an adult mentor, with a valid license and habitat fee (if required). The youth license is valid statewide.

An unfilled youth season tag may be used during the early or late muzzleloader season or one of the two shotgun seasons only. That youth must follow all other rules specified for each season. However party hunting with a youth tag is not allowed. A deer must be harvested by the youth with the tag. However, that tag holder may obtain deer tags for other season, just as any other hunter can do.

The youth deer season usually has mild temperatures and biting insects. Hunters should be prepared in case they youth harvests a deer by bringing bags of ice to cool the deer cavity and by having a locker that can accept the deer for processing. All deer taken must be reported using the harvest reporting system by midnight the day after the deer is recovered. Harvest reporting is a very important part of the deer management program in Iowa, playing a vital role in managing deer populations and hunting opportunities.

Hunters can report their deer on the DNR website at www.iowadnr.gov, by calling the toll free reporting number 1-800-771-4692, or at any license vendor.

Cyclones move on to game against Iowa

Sports

September 6th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says the Cyclones have moved on to this week’s 64th meeting in the series against Iowa. The Cyclones are looking to bounce back from a season opening 25-20 loss to Northern Iowa. It will be Campbell’s first taste of the rivalry with the Hawkeyes. Campbell says the Cyclones need to focus on getting better and not playing up their role as underdog.

Campbell has some history he can show his team. Two years ago the Cyclones opened with a loss to North Dakota State and two weeks later beat the Hawkeyes 20-17 in Kinnick Stadium and in 2007 the Cyclones lost to UNI 24-13 and the very next week beat Iowa 15-13. A decision Campbell and the Cyclone coaches must make this week is how often will they throw the direction of Iowa All American corner Desmond King.

This will be the first time Cyclone senior center Brian Bobek has played in this game but it is not his first involvement in a rivalry with the Hawkeyes. Bobek played at Minnesota before transferring to ISU. Bobek says while the Cyclones have moved on they have not forgotten about the mistakes that cost them on Saturday.

Iowa State quarterback Joel Lanning looks forward to the game. Lanning says the Cyclones will bounce back from the loss to UNI.

Cardinals wallop reeling Pirates 12-6

Sports

September 5th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Adam Wainwright drove in three runs and survived five occasionally bumpy innings to pick up his first victory since mid-July as the St. Louis Cardinals drummed the staggering Pittsburgh Pirates 12-6 on Monday. Wainwright hit an RBI-double off Chad Kuhl (3-3) in the second and added a two-run single in the fourth as the Cardinals held on to the second wild card spot in the National League by sending the Pirates to their seventh straight loss.

Wainwright (10-8) allowed four runs and struck out five as his ERA rose to 4.61. He hardly needed to be sharp as the Cardinals battered Pittsburgh’s beleaguered pitching staff. Jedd Gyorko and Matt Adams homered for St. Louis to extend the team’s streak of games with at least one home run to a club-record 24. Andrew McCutchen and Adam Frazier hit home runs for the Pirates, who have been outscored 47-22 during their current slide.
