Griswold School officials cancel Friday’s FB game w/Earlham: Not enough players

Sports

October 4th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Griswold School District late Monday afternoon said in a social media post, “Due to limited numbers and player injuries,” [the district feels] “it is in the best interest of [its] football players and program to cancel this week’s game at Earlham.” Officials added, “The district will continue to evaluate weekly and will make determinations concerning future games at a later time.”

The Earlham School District first posted the change notice on its social media page. The Districts said “This circumstance is especially disappointing as this was supposed to be the Homecoming game. This is an unfortunate situation that is out of the District’s control.” The District said “All other Homecoming activities planned for this week will take place as scheduled.”

BOSTON (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays were able to claim the first American League wild-card berth by downing the Boston Red Sox, 2-1. Devon Travis and Hanley Ramirez traded solo homers before Troy Tulowitzki lined a tiebreaking single in the eighth. Aaron Sanchez finished the regular season 15-2 by limiting the Red Sox to a run and two hits over seven innings.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees 5-2 to reach the postseason for the third time in five years, this time as the second AL wild-card team. Matt Wieters homered from both sides of the plate, delivering two-run blows each time. Kevin Gausman fired eight innings of three-hit ball for the Orioles, who will face the Blue Jays in Toronto on Tuesday.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Giants nosed out the Cardinals for the second NL wild-card berth and will take on the Mets in New York on Wednesday. San Francisco completed a three-game sweep of the Dodgers as Buster Posey provided three hits and three RBIs in a 7-1 romp over Los Angeles. Denard Span was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored to back Matt Moore, who was reached for just one run and three hits over eight innings.

CHASKA, Minn. (AP) — The United States has recaptured the Ryder Cup with a 17-11 win over Europe. The Cup-clinching point came from captain’s pick Ryan Moore, who wasn’t on the team a week ago. Other U.S. winners on Sunday were Patrick Reed, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Brandt Snedecker, Brooks Koepka and Zach Johnson.

ATLANTA (AP) — Matt Ryan and Julio Jones put up huge numbers as the Atlanta Falcons dropped the defending NFC champions to 1-3. Ryan threw for a team-record 503 yards and four touchdowns as Atlanta outscored Carolina, 48-33. Julio Jones was Ryan’s favorite target, grabbing 12 passes for a team record 300 yards to help the Falcons improve to 3-1.

Roethlisberger has 5 TD passes, Steelers thump Chiefs 43-14

Sports

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ben Roethlisberger threw five touchdowns passes for the fifth time in his career and the Pittsburgh Steelers throttled the Kansas City Chiefs 43-14 on Sunday night. A week after suffering the franchise’s worst loss in 27 years, the Steelers (3-1) responded by overwhelming the erratic Chiefs (2-2).

Roethlisberger hit Antonio Brown — wearing cleats featuring the profile of golf great and western Pennsylvania native Arnold Palmer — for a pair of scores. Roethlisberger also found Markus Wheaton, Darrius Heyward-Bey and Jesse James for touchdowns as the Steelers emphatically rebounded from a 31-point meltdown in Philadelphia. The quarterback finished 22 of 27 for 300 yards and a rating of 152.5, just shy of a perfect 158.3 rating.

Le’Veon Bell ran for 144 yards on 18 carries and caught five passes for 34 yards in his return from a three-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Bell’s return brought Pittsburgh’s high-powered offense back to full strength for the first time this year, though he spent most of the first half watching Roethlisberger go to work.

The Steelers scored a franchise-record 22 points in the first quarter as their defense forced a pair of turnovers Roethlisberger quickly converted into touchdowns. Pittsburgh reached the end zone three times in a span of six offensive snaps in the quarter and added a two-point conversion on top of it while the Chiefs floundered in the rain. Smith was 30 of 50 for 287 yards and two inconsequential fourth-quarter touchdowns after things were well out of hand. Spencer Ware ran for 82 yards but also fumbled in the first quarter that kick-started Pittsburgh’s record-setting run. The Chiefs allowed four sacks to a team that came in with an NFL-worst one on the season and could do little right.

Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles ran one time for 6 yards in his first game since tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last October. It was perhaps the lone bright spot in a loss that played in stark contrast to a romp over the New York Jets last week in which the Chiefs forced eight turnovers. Charcandrick West, who helped fill in during Charles’ absence was inactive due to an ankle injury.

Pittsburgh’s 43 points were the most allowed by Kansas City in a regular season game since Andy Reid took over in 2013. The Chiefs are off next week before traveling to take on the suddenly dangerous Oakland Raiders on Oct. 16. Kansas City is 5-1 against the Raiders under Reid.

Cardinals miss playoffs for 1st time since 2010

Sports

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A win on the final day of the season was not enough for the St. Louis Cardinals, who missed the playoffs for the first time since 2010. Matt Carpenter homered and Randal Grichuk keyed a six-run seventh-inning with a two-run double to lead the Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-4 Sunday.

But the Cardinals (86-76) were eliminated while still on the field when San Francisco (87-75) beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-1 and earned the second NL wild card.

St. Louis outfielder Matt Holliday was brought into the game momentarily to play left field in the ninth inning. He was given a standing ovation and taken out before the first pitch. The Cardinals announced Friday they plan to decline his 2017 option and allow him to become free agent.

Cardinals push playoff chase to final day, hold off Pirates

Sports

October 1st, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jedd Gyorko hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning, Matt Holliday provided another big boost and the St. Louis Cardinals pushed the playoff race to the final day of the regular season, holding off the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 Saturday. The Cardinals began the day one game behind San Francisco for the second NL wild-card spot. The Giants later hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Either the Cardinals or Giants will play at the New York Mets on Wednesday night in the wild-card game. Gyorko’s solo shot came on a 100-mph fastball from Felipe Rivero (1-6). Gyorko became the first Cardinals player to hit 30 homers in a season since Carlos Beltran in 2012.

The Cardinals tied it with a three-run sixth, highlighted by Holliday’s RBI pinch-hit single. Holliday homered on Friday night after the Cardinals said they wouldn’t pick up his $17 million option. Kevin Siegrist (6-3) pitched a scoreless eighth. Seung Hwan Oh stranded runners at second and third for his 19th save in 22 opportunities.
