Late throwing error lifts Cardinals to 6-5 win over Brewers

Sports

August 30th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Stephen Piscotty scored on a throwing error in the ninth inning after Carlos Martinez struck out a career-high 13, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Milwaukee Brewers 6-5 on Monday night.

With two on and nobody out in the ninth, Yadier Molina dropped down a bunt. Reliever Tyler Thornburg (5-5) threw to third base for a force out, but Jonathan Villar’s throw to first was wild, allowing Piscotty to score.

After Martinez held Milwaukee to one run over six innings, the Brewers scored four runs in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead. St. Louis tied it in the eighth on a two-run homer by Randal Grichuk off Corey Knebel. Seung Hwan Oh pitched a perfect ninth for his 14th save. Miguel Socolovich (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up his first win.

Jedd Gyorko and Kolten Wong each hit solo home runs for the Cardinals.

Game week begins at Iowa and Iowa State

Sports

August 29th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Game week is here for Iowa and Iowa State as both teams open at home on Saturday. The Hawkeyes take lofty expectations and a number-17 ranking in the Associated Press Poll into their opener against Miami of Ohio. Junior linebacker Josey Jewell says the Hawks have focused more on the two losses to end last season than the perfect 12-0 regular season.

The line between a good season and a great one is slim and Jewell says the Hawkeyes are focused on the details that made them successful last year. The Matt Campbell era begins at Iowa State when the Cyclones host Northern Iowa. Campbell says it may be game week but the evaluation process continues for the new staff.

Joel Lanning enter his first full season as the starting quarterback. The Ankeny native hopes to accomplish what few Cyclone signal callers have done in recent years and that is open and finish the season as the starter.

UNI enters the season with high expectations ands the Panthers are ranked fifth in the FCS preseason coaches poll.

Triggs earns first win as Athletics power past Cardinals 7-4

Sports

August 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Rookie Andrew Triggs earned his first win and Stephen Vogt and Khris Davis homered to lead the Oakland Athletics to a 7-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Triggs (1-1) allowed three runs on four hits, walked none and struck out eight in six innings.

Jaime Garcia (10-10) gave up a three-run homer to Vogt with two out in the third and a two-run shot to Davis, his 34th, with two out in the first. Garcia has allowed seven homers in his past three starts after giving up six in his first 13 starts.

Matt Carpenter doubled twice, homered and scored the Cardinals’ first three runs. His homer in the third extended the Cardinals’ streak to 17 games with a homer, matching their season best.

Chiefs safety Eric Berry signs franchise tender

Sports

August 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs safety Eric Berry signed his franchise tender and reported to camp Sunday, though he is almost certain to miss Kansas City’s preseason finale against Green Bay this week. Berry was given the franchise tag early in the offseason but had not signed the deal, which means he could skip all of training camp without being fined. The deal will pay him just over $10.8 million this season, making him the league’s highest-paid safety. Kansas City plays its first regular-season game Sept. 11 against San Diego.

Berry played in every game last season, less than a year after he was diagnosed with cancer. He made 55 tackles, a pair of interceptions and resumed his role as the heart and soul of the defense.

Athletics rally for 2 runs in 8th, edge Cardinals 3-2

Sports

August 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Khris Davis hustled home on an infield grounder in the eighth inning and the Oakland Athletics rallied for two runs, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Saturday night. St. Louis starter Mike Leake was scratched because he was still recovering from having shingles. The Cardinals fell to 1-8 in interleague games at Busch Stadium this season.

Oakland trailed 2-1 in the eighth when Davis singled with one out against Matt Bowman (2-5) and Ryon Healy doubled, extending the longest active hitting streak in the majors to 13 games. Seung Hwan Oh relieved and Max Muncy hit a grounder that Brandon Moss stopped with a dive, but Davis easily beat the throw to score the tying run. Brett Eibner followed with a sacrifice fly.

A’s starter Zach Neal pitched a career-best six innings. Oakland pitchers held the Cardinals without a hit after the fourth inning, retiring the last 17 batters. Daniel Coulombe (2-1) and Liam Hendriks combined for two perfect innings to set up Ryan Madson, who pitched a perfect ninth for his 26th save.
