Iowa women’s coach Jan Jensen says freshman Addie Deal will start on Thursday night when the eighth ranked Hawkeyes visit USC. Senior guard Taylor McCabe was lost for the season after suffering an ACL injury in Sunday’s win over 12th ranked Ohio State.

McCabe was averaging nearly nine points per game and also was one of the Hawkeye’s top defenders.

Iowa is 9-0 in the Big Ten and 18-0 overall.

Women’s health expert touts vaccine to prevent cervical cancer

News

January 27th, 2026 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A state senator announced Monday she has uterine cancer and is undergoing surgery today (Tuesday). While there’s no known prevention for uterine cancer, a women’s health expert urges young Iowa women to get the H-P-V vaccine to greatly increase their odds of preventing a similar disease — cervical cancer. Dr. Alexa Lowry, an obstetrician gynecologist at Emplify Health by Gundersen, says the vaccine can be given as young as age nine and she notes, cervical cancer is highly treatable, depending on when it’s found.

“Like any cancer, it depends on what stage it’s at when it’s identified,” Lowry says. “So, of course, if it is caught early, the survival rates can be a lot higher and sometimes can be quoted in the 90s percents, versus if it’s caught much later or more progressed, then the survival rates can be a lot lower.” Lowry says two types of tests can be done in a doctor’s office or clinic that can spot this type of cancer, the H-P-V test or a pap test.

“It is very rare for young women to get cervical cancer,” Lowry says. “I think the peak age is around 50, but somewhere in the reproductive years to 50s is most common. It’s very rare for women in their 20s and younger.” State health officials say about 110 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed every year in Iowa, or about 14-thousand cases per year nationwide. Lowry says cervical cancer is considered a preventable cancer.

“Getting the HPV vaccination and maintaining your screening with pap smears or HPV testing through your wellness visits with your provider,” Lowry says, “those are the ways that we can prevent abnormalities of the cervix, catch them if they’re there, and then prevent cancer altogether.”

Emplify Healthy by Gundersen has clinics in Calmar, Decorah, Fayette, Lansing, Postville and Waukon, and a hospital in West Union. State Senator Catelin Drey of Sioux City says she’s been diagnosed with stage one uterine cancer. Drey was elected to the Iowa Senate last year in a special election held to fill the vacancy created when Senator Rocky De Witt died of pancreatic cancer.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa head baseball coach Rick Heller announced two additions to his coaching staff on Tuesday. Casey Sole will join the Hawkeyes as director of programs and player strategies and Travis Mueller joins as director of player development.

Sole replaces Tyler Cropley, while Mueller replaces Wes Obermueller, who was promoted to the Hawkeye’s pitching coach.

Sole was on the Kirkwood Community College coaching staff for the 2024-25 season, helping the Eagles to a 37-22 overall record and a 21-12 mark in ICCAC play. He helped coach NJCAA Division II Player of the Year Cal Sullivan, who hit .438 with 92 hits, 74 RBIs and led the nation in doubles (33). The Eagles had three ICCAC first team selections in Sullivan, Boede Rahe and Jaxon Schumacher.

As a player, Sole spent three seasons as a catcher at Mount Mercy from 2021-24, appearing in 55 games for the Mustangs. Prior to Mount Mercy, he had stints at Southeast Missouri State and Kirkwood Community College, where he hit .273 with five home runs and 22 RBIs in 27 games as a redshirt freshman.

A Cedar Falls, Iowa, native, Sole was a three-time Rawlings Perfect Game Central Region honorable mention All-American at Cedar Falls High School. He was a first-team all-district, all-conference and all-metro selection as a junior and senior.

His brother, J.T. Sole, was on the Iowa baseball roster in 2015.

Before arriving at Iowa, Mueller worked as a private instructor at Dugout Sports and served as a coach in the Perfect Game Iowa Select Organization.

Mueller was inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletics Hall of Fame as an athlete following a standout four‑year baseball career with the Peacocks from 1994–97, where he played under head coach Rick Heller. A two‑way player, he was named the Iowa Conference MVP as a first baseman in 1996 after hitting .418 with 23 RBIs in 21 league games. He finished the season batting .331 with 43 RBIs over 50 games. On the mound, Mueller earned third‑team All‑America honors as Upper Iowa won the conference title, captured the Central Region championship and made an appearance in the NCAA Division III World Series.

In the World Series, Mueller homered in a 1–0 win over No. 1‑ranked Marietta College in game one. He then pitched all 10 innings in a 2–1 loss to the eventual national champions in game two, striking out 11. His 100 strikeouts that season finished one shy of the program’s single‑season record, and he totaled 180 strikeouts during his Upper Iowa career.

A Davenport West High School graduate, Mueller earned his bachelor’s degree in conservation management from Upper Iowa. He went on to play professionally in the Frontier League with the Canton Crocodiles.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa senior Taylor McCabe sustained a season-ending injury (ACL) during Iowa’s win over No. 12 Ohio State on Sunday. She will undergo surgery and miss the remainder of the season.

“This isn’t how I imagined my senior season ending, but adversity has always been part of the game,” McCabe said. “I’m committed to my recovery and to supporting my teammates in every way I can the rest of this season. I’m grateful for the love and encouragement from my coaches, teammates, and everyone who has been with me throughout this journey at the University of Iowa.”

McCabe’s career comes to an end as one of the best 3-point shooters in program history. The Fremont, Nebraska, native, ranks 11th in school history with 172 made 3-pointers. McCabe’s 3-point field goal percentage ties Kristi Smith (.407) for the best in school history. This season, McCabe was averaging 8.1 points per game, 3.5 rebounds per game, and was shooting 37 percent from long distance.

“This is incredibly difficult news for Taylor, her family, and our program,” P. Sue Beckwith, MD, head women’s basketball coach Jan Jensen said. “Taylor gave everything she had to this team, and her impact goes far beyond what has shown up on the court. We are thankful, she chose to be a Hawkeye a few years ago and she will always be a part of our Hawkeye family.”

McCabe is set to graduate this May with a civil engineering degree. She will pursue a graduate assistant position in women’s basketball to help her attain a postgrad degree.

McCabe was also a part of Iowa’s National Championship runs in 2023 and 2024.

Vision Atlantic has a fundraising goal of $39 million, which will be used to construct the YMCA expansion and child development center. The capital will be used as a line of credit, and as the dollars are paid back, the Foundation will donate up to 5% of the interest paid back to Vision Atlantic, who will use those dollars to operate the child development center.

Vision Atlantic’s Project Committee is actively working to secure the remaining $4.9 million needed to meet their fundraising goal.
