Youngstown St. slogs Northern Iowa in 14-10 comeback win

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — Martin Ruiz rushed for a 1-yard touchdown with 28 seconds left, capping a 10-point fourth-quarter comeback and lifting Youngstown State to a 14-10 win over Northern Iowa on Saturday night.

Trailing 10-7 in the fourth quarter, Youngstown State (5-1, 3-0 Missouri Valley) forced a three-and-out late and took possession at its 47-yard line with 3:37 left to play. The Penguins ran the ball on 10 consecutive plays to pay dirt — the last four by Ruiz, including the game-winner.

A 22-play, 86-yard drive that consumed 11:40 off the clock and featured 20 runs put Youngstown State on the scoreboard earlier in the quarter. It was capped by Tevin McCaster’s 1-yard plunge.

Northern Iowa (2-4, 1-2) was held to 173 total yards. The Panthers took a 3-0 lead on Austin Errthum’s 27-yard field goal midway through the second quarter. Three plays later, Duncan Ferch intercepted and returned Ricky Davis’ pass 34 yards, pushing the lead to 10.

Buechele’s TD passes send Texas over Iowa State 27-6

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Shane Buechele passed for 296 yards and two touchdowns and Texas got coach Charlie Strong a desperately-needed win, snapping a three-game losing streak with a win over Iowa State 27-6 Saturday night. Buechele threw scoring strikes of 37 yards to Jerrod Heard and 75 yards and Devin Duvernay in the third quarter as the Longhorns’ high-powered offense overcame a sluggish start.

Texas (3-3, 1-2 Big 12) hadn’t played at home in a month and the losing streak fueled intense speculation that Strong’s job is on the line in his third season. He has two seasons left on a five-year contract that pays him more than $5 million per season. The win also snapped a 14-game losing streak when Texas trailed at halftime.

Texas played its best defensive game of the season. Strong took over defensive play-calling two weeks ago and the Longhorns responded with eight sacks against Iowa State, containing a Cyclones offense that was averaging 39 points over the previous three games. Joel Lanning passed for 140 yards for Iowa State (1-6, 0-4).

The Cyclones are off next week, then host Kansas State on Oct. 29th.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Iowa scored touchdowns on five of its six opening-half possessions and defeated Purdue 49-35 on Saturday, winning its school-record ninth consecutive road game. The Hawkeyes (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) broke the former school record of eight consecutive road victories set from 1920-23. Of the nine consecutive road triumphs, eight have been against Big Ten opponents.

Iowa, 3-0 this season in Big Ten road games, completely dominated the first two quarters, running 41 plays for 397 yards, successfully converting 7 of 8 third-down opportunities.

Iowa hosts Wisconsin next Saturday.

San Diego stays on top in Pioneer with 38-7 win over Drake

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Anthony Lawrence threw for four touchdowns as San Diego remained undefeated in the Pioneer League, beating Drake 38-7 on Saturday. Lawrence had 259 yards on 19-of-29 passing for the Toreros (5-1, 4-0). Brian Riley and Ross Dwelley caught two touchdowns apiece and Jonah Hodges ran for 112 yards.

The Toreros led the Bulldogs (3-4, 2-2) throughout the game, beginning with Lawrence’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Riley in the first quarter. Tevin Heyward ran for a score midway through the second and Lawrence followed with an 8-yard touchdown throw to Dwelley to make it 21-0 with 2:36 to go before the break. Patrick Murray kicked a 44-yard field goal to put San Diego up 24-0 at halftime.

Drake’s Drew Lauer prevented the shut-out with a 9-yard scoring run with 7:38 left in the game. Starting Bulldogs QB Grant Kraemer — who was replaced in the fourth quarter — had 116 yards passing and one interception.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Kenta Maeda will start Game 1 of the NL Championship Series against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday night. Jon Lester gets the ball for the Cubs, who eliminated the Giants with a 6-5 win in Game 4 of their NL Division Series on Tuesday night.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Matt Kenseth joined Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards in a Joe Gibbs Racing sweep of the top three spots in qualifying Friday for the Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway. Kenseth turned a lap of 192.089 miles per hour to start on the pole Sunday at a track where he has won twice before, beating his teammate by a thousandth of a second. Busch will start alongside him with Edwards, the final driver to make a run in the last round of qualifying, starting third.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — NASCAR is unveiling its rules package for next season, changes designed to reduce downforce and give drivers more control of the race. Vice president of competition Scott Miller said the package is similar to one Sprint Cup drivers ran at Michigan, just with a rear spoiler that will be reduced in height.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Coach Mike Riley always believed he could turn Nebraska into a top 10 team. Yet each successive victory has fans in Lincoln envisioning bigger and better feats while Riley and the 10th-ranked Cornhuskers remain focused on one goal: Staying undefeated at Indiana on Saturday.
