Iowa visits Minnesota today (Saturday)

Sports

October 8th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeyes visit Minnesota today (Saturday), in the annual battle for Floyd of Rosedale. The Hawkeyes have dropped two of their last three games and the defense has been unable to stop the run. The ground game is a strength of the Gophers. The Hawkeyes have had difficulty against the Minnesota offense led by senior Mitch Leidner. Coach Kirk Ferentz says the Iowa offensive line needs to protect senior quarterback C.J. Beathard.

Bethard was sacked six times in the loss to Northwestern. Minnesota offensive tackle Jonah Pirsig is a native of Blue Earth, about 11 miles from the Iowa-Minnesota border. He says the Gophers are fired up to play the Hawkeyes. Pirsig says the Hawkeyes always come at them with a physical style of play, and that style has always remained the same.

Coverage of the action on KJAN begins at 9-a.m. with the pre-game show. Kick-off is set for 11-a.m. at TCF Bank Stadium, in Minneapolis.

Drake and Giacoletti need breakthrough season

Sports

October 7th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Drake fans are a patient bunch when it comes to the men’s basketball program. But even a fanbase that has enjoyed only four winning seasons since 1987 is going to expect progress this season. Ray Giacoletti enters his fourth year at the helm and the Bulldogs return eight players that saw significant minutes a year ago during a 7-24 campaign that included only two Missouri Valley Conference wins. (click on the left side of the audio player to listen to each cut)

Also returning is redshirt sophomore Kory Kuenstling. The 6-11 native of Dunkerton played in 30 games as a freshman before redshirting last season.

Giacoletti says the door is open for the Bulldogs to climb the ladder in the Valley.

Drake opens November 11 at home against South Dakota.

Atlantic excited for next challenge at ADM

Sports

October 6th, 2016 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans are gearing up for a road test this week at ADM.  The Tigers come in with a 2-4 record and fresh off a win last week over Denison-Schleswig.  Atlantic is 1-5 overall and is trying to bounce back after two big losses to state rated Creston and Glenwood in back to back weeks.  Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said despite the recent losses the kids are still focused and excited for their next challenge. Atlantic has really struggled to get their offense going this year and Coach McDermott hopes they can do a few different things to turn that around this week.

On the other side the ADM offense likes to spread the field out and are led by a dynamic player at the Quarterback spot in Sam McCartney.  McCartney has completed 54% of his passes this season for a total of 1,247 yards, 7 touchdowns compared to 2 interceptions.  He is also the Tigers’ leading rusher on the season and Coach McDermott knows the Trojan defense faces a unique challenge this week.

ADM Head Coach Mike Whisner says his team has become more balanced as the season has moved along but knows that McCartney is the key to the engine.

Coach Whisner sees a lot of similarities between the Denison team they faced last week and the Trojans.

We’ll have coverage of the Trojans and Tigers Friday night on KJAN! Chris Parks and Mike Smith bring you the call with the Dvorak Tire and Service Pre-Game Show at 6:30pm and Kickoff set for 7:30pm.  You can also catch our weekly pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? starting at 6:00pm.  Tune in on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, or on the free KJAN mobile app.  You can also watch the game with live streaming video on our TV page at kjan.com.
