Atlantic Boys Basketball Coach Alan Jenkins ready to enjoy the ride this season

Sports

November 28th, 2016 by admin

alanjenkinsThe Atlantic Boys Basketball team is preparing to open up the 2016-17 season on Tuesday night at Winterset and Head Coach Alan Jenkins wants that first game to be all his team worries about right now.  The Trojans are coming off a great 18-5 season that ended with a disappointing loss in the District Final to Glenwood.  Coach Jenkins says he hasn’t really talked about that game with his team because it’s behind them now and he likes the progress his team has made over the summer.

Coach Jenkins thinks this team has the ability to play a similar style to last year’s squad but there are plenty of differences in strengths.

Expectations are high again for the Trojans and Coach Jenkins wants this team to focus on what they have to do night in and night out and enjoy the ride.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New England quarterback Tom Brady has earned his 200th victory to tie Peyton Manning for the most by an NFL quarterback. Brady caught Manning by hitting Malcolm Mitchell for an eight-yard TD with 1:56 remaining in the Patriots’ 22-17 comeback over the Jets. Brady was 30 of 50 for 286 yards and no interceptions, with both scoring strikes going to Mitchell as the Patriots improved to 9-2.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Sebastien Janikowski capped Oakland’s comeback by drilling a 23-yard field goal with 1:45 left in a 35-32 win against Carolina. Derek Carr threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns despite missing a series with an injured pinky on his passing hand. The Raiders managed to improve to 9-2 after the 5-6 Panthers scored the first 25 points in the second half to go ahead by seven.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Seahawks had won three straight before the Buccaneers held them to 245 total yards in a 14-5 win over Seattle. The Bucs did their scoring on first-quarter touchdown passes by Jameis Winston to Mike Evans. Russell Wilson ran for 80 yards on eight carries but was just 17 of 33 for 151 yards and two interceptions as the Seahawks dropped to 7-3-1.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyrie Irving delivered 19 of his season-high 39 points while Cleveland was outscoring the 76ers 35-27 in the fourth quarter of a 112-108 comeback at Philadelphia. LeBron James finished with a triple-double of 16 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists. Kevin Love had 25 points and 11 boards as the Cavs improved to 13-2 with their fourth straight win.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Clippers have their first losing streak of the season after Glenn Robinson III and Myles Turner each scored 17 points to lead Indiana’s 91-70 stifling of Los Angeles. Al Jefferson finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, while fellow backup Rodney Stuckey had 12 points to help the Pacers post just their second two-game winning streak of the season. Blake Griffin had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Clippers, who shot just 31 percent from the floor and were 4-for-24 on 3-point attempts in falling to 14-4.

Chiefs beat Broncos 30-27 in overtime

Sports

DENVER (AP) — Cairo Santos’ 34-yard field goal hit the left upright and bounced through as the overtime period expired Sunday night to give the Kansas Chiefs a 30-27 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday night. That avoided the third tie in the NFL this season, something that hasn’t happened since 1973 before the league introduced overtime.

The winner followed a risky move by Broncos coach Gary Kubiak, who sent his kicker out for a 62-yard try with 1:01 left only to see Brandon McManus — who has hit from 70 yards in training camp — come up short. McManus practically begged to get a crack at the 62-yarder.

“That’s still well within my range. I just kind of hit the ground,” he said. “From that distance, everything kind of needs to be perfect just because of how far you are away. It didn’t happen for me.”

Instead of having to go 80 yards or more, however, the Chiefs got the ball at the Denver 48 with one timeout and just over a minute remaining. The Chiefs reached the Denver 16 before Santos ended the snoozer-turned-thriller in perfect fashion. Even his teammates hesitated as they ran out to celebrate, unsure if the ball had clanked through or not with the stadium rocking as if it hadn’t.

The Chiefs (8-3) kept up with the Oakland Raiders (9-2) in the AFC West race and the Broncos (7-4) could find themselves fighting for a wild card now.

Up next for Kansas City: The Chiefs continue a brutal road swing with a trip to Atlanta next weekend.

Williams-Goss scores 18, Gonzaga beats Iowa State 73-71

Sports

November 27th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Nigel Williams-Goss scored 18 points as No. 11 Gonzaga nearly blew an 18-point second-half lead before beating No. 21 Iowa State 73-71 in Sunday’s championship game at the AdvoCare Invitational. Josh Perkins added 12 points and Przemek Karnowki had 11 for Gonzaga (6-0). Iowa State (5-1) got 29 points from Deonte Burton, including 21 in the second half.

Iowa State played the invitational without Solomon Young, who could miss four weeks with a left hand injury. The freshman forward is averaging 8.7 points and 5.3 rebounds. The Cyclones face Cincinnati Thursday night, a team that received votes in the AP poll.

No. 19 West Virginia rolls past Iowa State 49-19

Sports

November 27th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Skyler Howard threw for 330 yards and tied a career high with five touchdowns and No. 19 West Virginia rolled past Iowa State 49-19 on Saturday.
Freshman Martell Pettaway burned his redshirt and ran for 181 yards in his debut for the Mountaineers (9-2, 6-2 Big 12), who outscored Iowa State 28-3 in the second half.

Howard’s 71-yard TD toss to Shelton Gibson and Pettaway’s 4-yard touchdown run, the first of his career, made it 35-19 late in the third quarter. Gibson followed with a 40-yard TD catch to give West Virginia to 23-point cushion. Justin Crawford, who ran for 331 yards against Oklahoma last week, was replaced by Pettaway after two series.

Kene Nwangwu had a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Cole Netten kicked four field goals to lead Iowa State (3-9, 2-7). But settling for three instead of converting for seven points – and losing the turnover battle 4-0 – killed the Cyclones chances. Jacob Park threw for 371 yards and David Montgomery ran for 141 yards for Iowa State.

The improvement the Cyclones made from September to November was impressive, even though the game snowballed out of control Saturday. It figured to take a few years for Iowa State to become respectable in the Big 12. With a full offseason, a year of conference play under his belt and an emerging quarterback in Park, young coach Matt Campbell might get the Cyclones near bowl contention in 2017.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Curtis Samuel scored on a 15-yard touchdown run in double overtime to give second-ranked Ohio State a 30-27 triumph over No. 3 Michigan. Samuel’s run came after J.T. Barrett barely extended the drive on a fourth-and-one plunge. The Wolverines led 17-7 in the third quarter before the Buckeyes improved to 11-1.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State has nosed out Ohio State for a spot in the Big Ten title game against Wisconsin. Trace McSorley completed 17 of 23 passes for 376 yards and four touchdowns as the eighth-ranked Nittany Lions ripped Michigan State, 45-12 to win the Big Ten East. Andre Robinson added 14- and 40-yard touchdown runs in the fourth quarter to help Penn State outscore the Spartans 35-0 in the second half.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Jalen Hurts shook off a pair of first-half interceptions by throwing for 286 yards and running for a pair of TDs to send top-ranked Alabama to a 30-12 win over No. 16 Auburn. Hurts completed 27-of-36 and threw for two touchdowns as the Crimson Tide improved to 12-0 heading into the SEC title game. ArDarius Stewart had 10 catches for 127 yards and a TD, and Bo Scarbrough ran for 90 yards to help the Tide finish with a 501-182 advantage in total yards.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Fifth-ranked Wisconsin bolstered its CFP hopes by shutting out Minnesota in the second half of a 31-17 triumph over the Golden Gophers. Corey Clement rushed for two fourth-quarter touchdowns and the Badgers picked off Mitch Leidner four times in the second half to improve to 10-3 overall, 7-2 in the Big Ten. Backup quarterback Bart Houston completed 9 of 14 passes for 123 yards while playing the entire second half for Wisconsin because of an injury to starter Alex Hornibrook.

UNDATED (AP) — University of Texas officials have announced that Tom Herman is replacing Charlie Strong, who was dismissed as head football coach after going 16-21 over three seasons. Herman led the Cougars to a 22-4 record over two seasons. In Baton Rouge, the LSU Tigers have promoted Ed Orgeron (OH’-jur-ahn) to head coach and he led them to a 5-2 record on an interim basis following the firing of Les Miles.
