Atlantic girls show improvement at Lewis Central Friday

Sports

January 14th, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic girls basketball team showed some progress in a 65-33 loss at Lewis Central on Friday night. The Trojans slowed the game down and were aggressive to the basket early in the game to hang with the Class 4A 5th ranked Titans for a while.

Lewis Central led by 8 at the end of the first quarter and 13 at the half. It wasn’t until the third quarter that the Titans fully pulled away as they took advantage of too many unforced Trojan turnovers to build a 20 point lead.

The titans were led by 17 points from Maegan Holt and 13 from Megan Witte as they improve to 12-1.  Atlantic was led by 11 points from Catherine Leonard as they fall to 0-13. Next up the Trojans have a home game on Tuesday night against Kuemper Catholic.

Chiefs/Steelers game time moved to Sunday night

Sports

January 13th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Steelers and Chiefs playoff game on Sunday has been moved from an early afternoon kickoff to prime time because of an ice storm due to hit the Kansas City-area this weekend. The game has been moved from a 12:05 p.m. Central time kickoff to 7:20 p.m. to allow more time to treat roads and parking lots.

Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston was limited in the final practice for Sunday’s divisional playoff game against Pittsburgh, though his game status was left blank on the final injury report. That means Houston should be available for the first time since a loss to Tennessee on Dec. 18.

Chiefs safety Eric Berry and running back Spencer Ware practiced fully all week and are also expected to play in Sunday night’s game. Berry had been dealing with a sore Achilles tendon and Ware had bruised his ribs late in the regular season.

Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali was the only player who did not practice Friday, but that followed his usual routine. Hali practices sparingly during the week to rest his sore knees.

Cardinals agree to deals with relievers Rosenthal, Siegrist

Sports

January 13th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Cardinals have agreed to terms with Trevor Rosenthal and Kevin Siegrist on one-year contracts Friday to avoid arbitration with both of the pitchers. Rosenthal will be paid $6.4 million this season, a bump from the $5.6 million he made last year. The former All-Star converted 14 of 18 saves before losing the closer’s job last season, and wound up going 2-4 with a 4.46 ERA in a season curtailed by injuries.

The Cardinals plan to stretch him out in spring training, perhaps with an eye on the rotation. Siegrist made $539,000 last season, when he went 6-3 with a 2.77 ERA in 67 appearances. The right-hander is expected to have a similar role in the Cardinals’ revamped bullpen this season.

Right-hander Carlos Martinez and left-hander Michael Wacha are the only arbitration-eligible players left for St. Louis after first baseman Matt Adams agreed to a deal earlier in the week.

Western Iowa native is named to national wheelchair basketball team

Sports

January 13th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

A western Iowa native who plays on the wheelchair basketball team at the University of Nebraska at Omaha has been selected for the U-S Men’s World Championships Team. Brent Regier, of Woodbine, is a junior at U-N-O and he’ll travel with the team to Argentina for a qualifier later this month.

“It’s really exciting to be a part of this team and only have been playing the sport for a few years,” Regier says. “It’s really cool to be able to participate at such a high level so quickly with a bunch of other players from across the country who share the same passion for the sport.” Regier and one of his U-N-O teammates — Jeromie Meyer of Henderson, Nebraska — were just notified a few days ago they’d made the 12-member national team.

“We had a training camp this past week in Colorado Springs where they invited in about 30 other guys from across the country who they thought might be a good fit for the team,” Regier says. “They narrowed it down to 12 of us that are able to travel this last Saturday we found out.” Regier says he’s ready for this latest challenge.

“I won’t have to prepare too hard,” Regier says. “Coach Mike (Kult) had us in good shape and taught us the fundamentals and everything we needed to know going in. The biggest part there was just pushing hard the whole time and really being committed to the cause.”

The team will travel to Buenos Aires, Argentina for the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation Continental Qualifier running from January 22nd to the 29th. The top two teams will go on to the world championships, scheduled for June in Toronto, Canada. Team USA has reached the championship game in three of the last five world championships, winning the title in 2005 and 2009.
