Former UNI QB Kurt Warner named to NFL Hall of Fame

Sports

February 5th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

HOUSTON (AP) — Running backs LaDainian Tomlinson and Terrell Davis and quarterback Kurt Warner are part of the seven-man class heading into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Sackmaster Jason Taylor and kicker Morten Andersen also made it in Saturday, along with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, a contributor, and Seahawks safety Kenny Easley, a senior nominee.

Like Taylor, Tomlinson got in on his first ballot. In nine seasons with the Chargers and two more with the Jets, he redefined the running back position, as dangerous catching the ball (for 4,772 career yards) and he was running it (13,684).

Warner won one Super Bowl and two overall MVP awards while leading “The Greatest Show on Turf” with the Rams. He ended his career in the league holding several records, including the three highest passing yard totals in Super Bowl history. The Cedar Rapids native is the fastest player to reach 10,000 passing yards in a career and is also just the third quarterback to throw 100 touchdown passes for two different teams. As a Panther, Warner started his senior season in 1993, leading the Panthers to an 8-4 season and a conference championship. He was named the Gateway Conference Offensive MVP on the way to getting the Panthers to the first round of the playoffs. Warner is still ranked in the top 10 all-time at UNI in career passing efficiency, average yards per pass and average yards per completion.

Terrell Davis led Denver to two titles over a career that covered a mere 78 games. In 1998, he became the fourth player to surpass 2,000 yards rushing in a season.

St. Louis bans smokeless tobacco at Busch, other venues

Sports

February 4th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Baseball players with big wads of chewing tobacco in their cheek are now a thing of the past at Busch Stadium. The St. Louis Board of Aldermen voted Friday to prohibit the use of smokeless tobacco products like chewing tobacco, dip and snuff at all sports venues, including Cardinals games at Busch Stadium. The measure provides no exemption for players or anyone else on the field or in the dugouts.

The bill’s sponsor, Alderwoman Dionne Flowers, says it sends a message that tobacco shouldn’t be associated with sports. Busch Stadium becomes the 14th Major League Baseball venue where smokeless tobacco is banned. Last month, the city council in St. Petersburg, Florida, banned smokeless tobacco products at all organized sporting events, including Tampa Bay Rays games.
