Sports

March 4th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Mikayla Nachazel scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Springville shut down Turkey Valley 45-36 Friday night to win its second consecutive Class 1A state championship.

Rylee Menster added 14 points and four assists for the Orioles (25-2), who won their third title overall and became the first 1A team to repeat since Rock Valley in 2002 and 2003. It was a rematch of last year’s championship game, which Springville won 48-47.

Springville also won the state title in 2008. Nachazel, a 5-foot-11 junior, had a double-double by halftime (10 and 10) and was voted captain of the all-tournament team for the second straight year. Shelby Reicks and Sadie Nymeyer each scored 13 points for Turkey Valley (22-3), which made a late run after falling behind by 14 but couldn’t get the stops it needed to climb all the way back.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Erica Bousema scored 17 points and Western Christian survived the foul troubles of its star to beat Treynor 51-48 Friday night for its fourth Class 2A championship in the last six years. Bousema sank two free throws with 12.5 seconds for the go-ahead points and the Wolfpack (25-2) held on to hand Treynor its first loss after 27 victories.

Western prevailed even though star junior Ashtyn Veerbeek managed only five points and spent time on the bench because of fouls. Veerbeek had been dominant in her first two games at state, putting up 55 points and 29 rebounds, and was voted captain of the all-tournament team.

Karsyn Winterfeld scored 12 points for Western Christian and Erika Feenstra added seven. Madelyn Deitchler led Treynor with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Konnor Sudmann scored 15 and Randi Robinson had eight.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Alize Johnson scored 20 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead Missouri State to a 70-64 victory over Northern Iowa in a Missouri Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinal on Friday night. No. 6 seed Missouri State (17-15) plays second-seeded and No. 21-ranked Wichita State (28-4) in Saturday’s semifinal.

The Bears had a seven-point lead with four minutes left. Bennett Koch made two free throws and Klint Carlson converted a 3-point play to pull Northern Iowa to 59-57. Missouri State turned the ball over on its next possession, and Jordan Ashton then missed a 3 for the Panthers.

Johnson’s free throw made it 60-57. The Panthers then missed another bucket, and the Bears shot 10 of 10 from the line to seal it. Chris Kendrix had 11 points for the Bears. Jarred Dixon added 10 points and made all 10 of his foul shots. Jeremy Morgan scored 18 points to lead No. 3 seed Northern Iowa (14-16), which has lost four straight.

Terrific season for Exira-EHK ends in overtime thriller

Sports

March 3rd, 2017 by admin

The Exira-EHK Spartans saw their terrific season come to an end in overtime of the Class 1A semifinals.  Turkey Valley knocked down four free throws in the overtime session to give them a 48-46 win.

The Spartans used tough defense and inside scoring to build a seven point halftime lead but Turkey Valley rallied to take a two point lead by the end of the third.  The Spartans were waiting for that one big shot to go down but it never came on an 0-15 three point shooting afternoon. Exira-EHK Head Coach Tom Petersen talked about just needing one to go down.

Sophia Peppers was big again for the Spartans with 21 points and 10 rebounds, including a board and put-back with 18 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 42.  After a block by Peppers on the other end the game went to the extra session.  Pepper was proud of what her team accomplished this year.

The Spartans were playing in their third straight state tournament and this was the second time during that span that they played in the semifinals. The Spartans season ends with a 24-2 record.  Senior Maggie Rasmussen said her team has a lot to be proud of with all the hard work they put in and she’s going to miss it.

The Spartans have a great Senior class and Coach Petersen said it was tough to address the team after the game.

Elli Winter and Kayla Gebel led the Trojans with 13 points each. Turkey Valley will play in a state championship rematch tonight at 6:00pm against Springville.

No. 22 Drake women win 18th in row despite 46 from Fruendt

March 2nd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Becca Hittner scored 22 points and Lizzy Wendell 21 and No. 22 Drake extended its school-record winning streak to 18 games, beating Missouri State 98-91 on Thursday despite a 46-point performance from the Lady Bears’ Liza Fruendt.

Brenni Rose added 16 points as six Bulldogs scored in double figures. Drake (24-0, 17-0) will seek to become the first Missouri Valley Conference team to go undefeated in regular-season MVC play when it takes on Wichita State on Saturday.

Drake led from early on and was up by 22 midway through the second quarter. Missouri State (16-12, 12-5) went on a 10-0 run to get within one, 52-51, with 7:27 left in the third quarter. The Bulldogs clung to their lead, finally putting the game away by making 8 of 8 free throws in the final minute.

Fruendt’s 46 points are the fifth-most in school history. She was 17-of-31 shooting, 6 of 16 from the arc and made 6 of 7 free throws.

Late 3 gives Iowa win over mistake-prone No. 11 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Jordan Bohannon hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 9 seconds left, and Iowa capitalized on No. 22 Wisconsin’s sloppy final few minutes with a 7-0 run to beat the Badgers 59-57 on Thursday night.

After Ethan Happ missed two free throws that could have sealed the win for Wisconsin, Iowa’s Peter Jok missed a jumper in the lane. But Cordell Pemsl corralled the offensive rebound and Bohannon hit the 3 from the left wing, stunning the crowd at the Kohl Center after Wisconsin led by nine with 4:15 left.

The Hawkeyes (17-13, 9-8 Big Ten) have won two straight road games as they try to improve their postseason resume.

The Badgers (22-8, 11-6) lost their third straight game, going scoreless for the final 3:12. Iowa forced turnovers on consecutive Wisconsin inbounds passes in that stretch, converting each mistake into baskets to set up Bohannon’s game-winner. Bohannon finished with 11 points. Bronson Koenig led the Badgers with 19 points.

Spartans fall short against Turkey Valley in OT

Sports

March 2nd, 2017 by Jim Field

The rematch is set in Class 1A. For the second straight year, it’s Springville against Turkey Valley for the state championship.

Second-ranked Turkey Valley completed that pairing by pulling out a 48-46 overtime victory over Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton. The Trojans will take a 23-2 record against No. 1 Springville at 6 p.m.

Springville edged Turkey Valley 48-47 in last year’s title game and beat the Trojans 40-27 earlier this season. The Orioles advanced with a 61-43 victory over Kingsley-Pierson.

Elli Winter and Kayla Gebel led Turkey Valley with 13 points each. Gebel scored 11 of her points in the second half, including three key buckets in the third quarter to bring the Trojans back with a seven-point halftime deficit. Winter grabbed 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Shelby Reicks added 10 points, six steals and four assists for Turkey Valley, including two free throws that broke the game’s final tie. Morgen Kuennen scored eight for the Trojans.

Exira/EHK got most of its scoring from its strong inside duo of Sophia Peppers and Kealey Nelson. Peppers finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Nelson had 12 points and 11 rebounds. The two were especially strong on the offensive boards, helping the Spartans put up 18 second-chance points.

Peppers scored on a putback to tie it at 42-all with 18 seconds left in regulation, then blocked a shot at the other end to force overtime.

Her two free throws tied it at 44 with 2:33 left in the extra session, but Reicks was fouled 11 seconds later and made both shots for a 46-44 lead. Three turnovers hurt the Spartans in the final two minutes and Gebel sank two free throws for the final points.

Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton played at state for the third straight year and finishes 24-2.
