The Iowa Hawkeyes are set to travel to Houston for the NCAA baseball tournament. The Hawks are the fourth seed and will play hopst a top seeded Houston on Friday. It is Iowa’s second trip to a regional in three years under coach Rick Heller.

Texas A@M and Baylor collide in the other first round game. Iowa is 38-20 after winning its first Big Ten Tournament title over the weekend. The Hawkeyes grabbed the automatic bid after Sunday’s 13-4 win over Northwestern. Iowa pitcher Nick Gallagher who says the players were happy with the Houston location.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Energy has changed their name to the Iowa Wolves, reflecting Minnesota’s recent purchase of the D-League franchise. The Timberwolves made the announcement Tuesday at Wells Fargo Arena, the 14,000-seat arena where the franchise has played since its inception in 2007.

With Minnesota coach Tom Thibodeau in attendance, the Timberwolves unveiled their new affiliate’s logo and colors. The Wolves’ colors are navy blue and bright green, much like Minnesota’s new identity, with a secondary logo featuring an outline of the state of Iowa and a large “W” in the middle.

The D-League has added 10 teams in the last 30 months and will have a league-record 26 teams in 2017-18, when it will be known as the NBA Gatorade or G-League.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Chase Utley, Logan Forsythe and Chris Taylor combined to reach base 11 times and totaled six runs, helping the streaking Los Angeles Dodgers rally past the St. Louis Cardinals 9-4 on Tuesday night. Utley finished a homer shy of the cycle as the Dodgers won their season-high sixth straight game. Forsythe reached five times, including three walks, and Taylor reached three times.

Adrian Gonzalez’s sacrifice fly and Utley’s RBI double started the Dodgers comeback in the third. Enrique Hernandez tied it at 3 with a single, and Paul DeJong’s throwing error on the same play scored Utley to give the Dodgers a 4-3 lead. Michael Wacha (2-3) needed 77 pitches to get through three innings, the shortest outing for a Cardinals starter this season. Three of the four runs he allowed were earned. Brandon Morrow (1-0) led a parade of six Dodgers relievers.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Third baseman Jedd Gyorko was scratched from the St. Louis Cardinals lineup Tuesday because his wife is having a baby. Gyorko was originally going to bat cleanup against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jhonny Peralta replaced him in the lineup and will bat sixth, with Yadier Molina moving from the No. 5 spot to cleanup.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said no roster move has been made, but Stephen Piscotty (personal leave) was flying back to St. Louis. Gyorko has twin boys. He and his wife are expecting their first girl. Gyorko is hitting .316 with eight homers and 22 RBIs this season.

Individually Sammi Jahde of CAM is in 7th with an opening round of 89 and Griswold’s Mateya Peters sits in a tie for 21st with an opening round of 99. Mount Ayr’s Abbey Schafer is tied for 2nd with an 83 on day one.

Class 2A @ Jester Park Golf Course, Granger

Individually Aly Anderson of Treynor is in 2nd after an opening round of 78, she is one shot back of Annika Patton of Alta-Aurelia. Madelyn Deitchelr of Treynor is 10th after an opening 87.

Class 4A @ Elmwood CC, Marshalltown

Individually Ashton Carter of Creston is tied for 12th with a first day 93.

Class 5A @ Coldwater Links, Ames

The Atlantic Girls Golf team got off to a great start to defending their state title at the Class 3A State Tournament on Tuesday. The Trojans shot a first day total of 339 at Lake Panorama National Golf Club in Panora to lead the field.  Individually Brooke Newell had a terrific opening round of two-under 70 to share the lead with Emily Snelling of Clear Lake.

Class 5A Tournament – Coldwater Links, Ames

The Atlantic Girls Golf team will begin play today in the Class 3A State Golf Tournament at Lake Panorama National Golf Course in Panora and the Trojans are ready to defend their title from last season. The Trojans qualified for state with a Regional Final win at 5×80 Golf Course in Menlo last week. The Trojans shot 361 at that final to win it by 26 strokes over Kuemper Catholic but despite the big win Atlantic Head Coach Kathy Hobson said they can play even better.

Brooke Newell was Runner-Up at the Regional Final with an 85 and she has been a strong leader for the Trojans throughout her career. Coach Hobson said there is strong leadership throughout the whole group but it definitely helps having Brooke lead the charge.

The Trojans have made an effort to challenge themselves with tough tournaments all season and Coach Hobson knows that will certainly help at the State Tournament because they have already competed against a lot of those teams. When asked about a number goal for the weekend Coach Hobson said she thinks they will need to go a little lower than last year to defend their title.

Coach Hobson thinks the experience of winning it last year should make the girls comfortable and give them a slight advantage playing there again. She said she doesn’t fell like there is pressure on them as defending champs. Play will continue Wednesday in Panora.
