PHOENIX (AP) — Chris Herrmann hit a game-ending RBI single in the 10th inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 last night. The surging Diamondbacks scored two in the eighth and one in the ninth to force extra innings. They have won four in a row and 13 of 15.

DETROIT (AP) — J.D. Martinez and Miguel Cabrera homered and Justin Verlander pitched seven strong innings as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3 last night. Verlander was down 3-0 before getting an out, but didn’t allow another run as the Tigers won their second straight after an eight-game losing streak.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Florida scored four runs in the eighth inning to pull away from LSU, and the Gators beat their Southeastern Conference rival 6-1 last night to complete a two-game sweep in the College World Series finals for their first national title in baseball. The Gators posted the eighth sweep in the 15 years of the best-of-three finals format.

CHICAGO (AP) — Jose Abreu hit a game-ending, two-run single off Dellin Betances, and the Chicago White Sox stopped a four-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the New York Yankees last night. Kevan Smith sparked the winning rally with a one-out walk. Betances then walked Alen Hanson and hit Yolmer Sanchez, loading the bases.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Two people with ties to the Louisiana State University baseball team aided a man who lost consciousness during the LSU-Florida game at the College World Series in Omaha.

Dr. Jerry Poché and Jimmy Roy were alerted to the slumping man in the sixth inning Monday night. Poché gave the man chest compressions, and Roy performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Omaha Fire Department Battalion Chief Tim McCaw said Tuesday that fire medics took the 87-year-old man to Nebraska Medical Center. McCaw didn’t have the man’s name.

Roy told The Advocate newspaper of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, that the man “didn’t have a pulse, and me and Doc brought him back.”

Roy’s son is Travis Roy, LSU strength and conditioning coach. Poché’s son is pitcher Jared Poché, who’s scheduled to start Tuesday night

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Randal Grichuk and Jedd Gyorko each homered and drove in three runs, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Cincinnati Reds 8-2 yesterday. It was a makeup for an April 29 game that was postponed because of severe weather. Grichuk hit his second homer in two games since being recalled from Triple-A.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Brady Singer struck out a career-high 12 in seven innings, Jonathan India doubled in two runs, and Florida beat LSU 4-3 in Game 1 of the College World Series finals last night. The Gators need a win today or tomorrow to earn their first national championship.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Kyle Schwarber says he’s not surprised the Chicago Cubs demoted him, saying that “the numbers spoke for themselves.” Schwarber’s October return following a knee injury helped fuel Chicago’s first World Series title in 108 years, but he was sent down to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday after hitting .171 in 64 games this season.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Blues didn’t extend a qualifying offer to Nail Yakupov, making the 2012 No. 1 pick an unrestricted free agent. Yakupov had just nine points in 40 games last season after four years with the Edmonton Oilers. The Russian winger has never had more than 33 points in a season.

Minors Setback: Kyle Schwarber not surprised about demotion

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Kyle Schwarber says he’s not surprised the Chicago Cubs demoted him, saying that “the numbers spoke for themselves.” Schwarber’s October return following a knee injury helped fuel Chicago’s first World Series title in 108 years, but he was sent down to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday after hitting .171 in 64 games this season.

Schwarber joined Iowa in time for Monday’s home game against New Orleans, where he was scheduled to hit third and play left field. Schwarber says the Cubs haven’t given him a timeline for when he might rejoin them. He says he’s looking to recapture what made him successful in the first place.
