MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jimmy Nelson finally beat St. Louis with six strong innings, and the Milwaukee Brewers held on for a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals on Tuesday night. Nelson entered 0-8 with a 7.01 ERA in 11 appearances against the Cardinals. This time, the right-hander overcame his division rival by allowing just two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Dylan Bundy allowed three hits over a career-high eight innings, newcomer Tim Beckham had two hits and scored twice and the resurgent Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 7-2 Tuesday night for their fourth straight victory. Seth Smith drove in three runs to help the Orioles move within two games of .500 for the first time since July 3.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Rams are long gone from St. Louis, but they still may owe more than $350,000 in taxes to the state of Missouri. The Missouri Supreme Court on Tuesday reversed a ruling from an administrative hearing that determined the NFL team didn’t have to pay state sales tax on a special city entertainment fee added to tickets from 2007 to 2013.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State basketball coach Bruce Weber agreed a two-year contract extension Tuesday that could keep him with the Wildcats through the 2020-21 season. It was the first major personnel decision made by new athletic director Gene Taylor.

Drake athletic director Hatfield-Clubb out after 11 years

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Drake athletic director Sandy Hatfield-Clubb is leaving the Bulldogs after 11 years. The school announced Tuesday that Hatfield-Clubb’s last day will be Friday. It says Hatfield-Clubb has accepted a senior partner position with the Pictor Group, an intercollegiate athletics consulting firm. Associate director Megan Franklin will serve as Drake’s interim athletic director while the school searches for a new director.

Hatfield-Clubb is perhaps best known for expanding the Drake Relays track meet and hiring current women’s basketball coach Jennie Baranczyk, who led the Bulldogs back to the Top 25 a year ago. Hatfield-Clubb’s last two men’s basketball coaching hires, Mark Phelps and Ray Giacoletti, failed to turn the program into Missouri Valley Conference contenders.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession against Nebraska receiver Stanley Morgan Jr. has been dropped. Teammate Antonio Reed is scheduled to go to trial next month on misdemeanor drug charges stemming from the same traffic stop in Florida last spring.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach John Cook is among four new members of the American Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame. The AVCA announced the inductees Monday. Cook led the Cornhuskers to national championships in 2000, 2006 and 2015 and took four other teams to the NCAA semifinals.

CHICAGO (AP) — Matt Davidson singled in Leury Garcia with two outs in the ninth inning for his second game-ending hit in as many days, and the Chicago White Sox rallied to beat Toronto Blue Jays 7-6 on Monday night after losing top prospect Yoan Moncada to a right knee injury. Adam Engel sparked the winning rally with a one-out single against Roberto Osuna.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he confronted a Chicago Cubs fan during Sunday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers because the man said “some really lousy, awful stuff” with a lot of children around. The Republican governor was caught on video nearly getting in the man’s face at Miller Park.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Lance Lynn threw six strong innings and Jose Martinez homered and drove in three runs as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 Sunday for their fifth win in seven games. Lynn retired the last eight batters he faced in improving to 5-0 lifetime against Arizona.

BOSTON (AP) — Alex Gordon’s two-run triple capped a four-run eighth inning, and the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox Sunday, a day after their season-high, nine-game winning streak was snapped. Jason Hammel allowed three runs on seven hits to end a six-start winless streak. Kelvin Herrera got the final three outs at Fenway Park for his 23rd save.

BOSTON (AP) — Looking to bolster their offense for a run for a playoff spot, the Kansas City Royals acquired outfielder Melky Cabrera from the Chicago White Sox Sunday for two minor-league pitchers. The Royals entered the day three games behind the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians. Kansas City holds the second wild-card spot by 2½ games over Tampa Bay.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes is already turning heads just a few days into training camp, running a perfect two-minute drill to lead his team to a touchdown. And that bodes well for the Kansas City Chiefs, who hope the first-round draft pick can emerge as the backup to Alex Smith before someday taking his job.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska opened preseason football practice with a new quarterback, a new defensive system and a fan base hoping third-year coach Mike Riley is getting closer to ending a conference championship drought nearing two decades. The Cornhuskers are picked third or fourth in the Big Ten West in most preseason polls.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt homered and drove in three runs, Zack Greinke pitched seven strong innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 Saturday night. Cardinals starter Mike Leake allowed three runs and four hits over five innings.

BOSTON (AP) — Sandy Leon slid into home plate and avoided catcher Drew Butera’s tag on Eduardo Nunez’s ground out in the 10th inning Saturday night, lifting the Boston Red Sox past Kansas City 9-8 to end the Royals’ nine-game winning streak. Lorenzo Cain hooked a three-run homer around the right-field pole and Whit Merrifield had a career-best four hits — all singles — for the Royals, who were looking to match their longest win streak since June 2014.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jason Heyward homered in the 11th inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Saturday night to strengthen their hold on first place in the NL Central. Second-place Milwaukee pulled within a half-game of Chicago with a 2-1 victory in the series opener Friday night. But the Cubs responded with their fourth win in five games overall.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Hall of Fame outfielder Lou Brock says he is free of cancer more than three months after the 78-year-old St. Louis Cardinals great announced he had been diagnosed with a type of blood cancer. Brock said in a statement Friday that a doctor’s diagnosis that he had conquered multiple myeloma was “the greatest news ever.” He credited God and thanked family, friends and fans for their support, saying he remained hopeful.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Ryan Preece survived a green-white-checkered finish to win the NASCAR Xfinity race Saturday at Iowa Speedway for his first career victory. The 26-year-old Preece, running the second of a two-race deal in the Number 20 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, started from the pole in Newton, Iowa.
