CLEVELAND (AP) — Jay Bruce hit an RBI double in the 10th inning as the Cleveland Indians rallied for their 22nd straight win, 3-2 over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night. With their first walk-off win in the streak, the Indians remained unbeaten since Aug. 23 and now have the second-longest streak in baseball history, trailing only the 1916 New York Giants’ 26-gamer.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rookie Luke Weaver threw six innings of two-hit ball, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-2. Tommy Pham drove in two runs and stole two bases for St. Louis. The Cardinals have won five of their last six and nine of 12. They are chasing the first-place Cubs in the NL Central and the Rockies in the wild-card standings.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The student meets the teacher on Sunday when Doug Pederson leads the Philadelphia Eagles against Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Reid gave Pederson his first starting job in the NFL and later his first coaching gig, too. Pederson hopes to repay Reid with a loss.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs racked up 537 yards of offense against the New England Patriots. Center Mitch Morse says that game plan won’t matter all that much against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. The Chiefs say the Eagles place a priority on the pass rush, while the Patriots often drop linemen into pass coverage. The Chiefs hope to build a reputation of having an offensive line that’s versatile and adaptable. They also want their running game to keep the Eagles off balance.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska believes it can build off the second half of its loss to Oregon when Northern Illinois visits Lincoln. The Cornhuskers have given up more than 1,000 yards in their first two games, but they shut out the Ducks after halftime in a 42-35 loss last week. Northern Illinois will try to beat a Big Ten opponent for the fourth time in five games under coach Rod Carey.

The Atlantic Trojans football team is using the close loss to Denison-Schleswig in week 3 as a learning experience to prepare for their next game at home against Winterset. Atlantic fought hard and made a lot of big plays last Friday but the Monarchs came up with a couple more at the end to out-duel the Trojans. Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said they were obviously disappointed to lose the game but they were pleased with the team’s compete level. He said it wasn’t a lack of effort that cost the Trojans the game and ultimately a game like that can be a valuable learning tool to clean up the details.
The Trojans get their next opportunity to show that improvement on Friday night at the Trojan Bowl against Winterset. The Huskies are 2-1 on the season and are coming off a nice win over ADM last week. Coach McDermott says the Winterset offense uses a lot of variety which makes them tough to prepare for.
Winterset quarterback Casey Kleemeier has completed 63% of his passes for 481 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season. He has also rushed for two scores and Coach McDermott said keeping him in the pocket will be a big key.
Offensively Atlantic hopes that the line can continue to improve and give quarterback Jaxson Eden time to be comfortable for throws throughout the game. Coach McDermott also said the run game will need to improve to have success.

Weaver (6-1), a rookie right-hander who has boosted the St. Louis rotation, allowed one unearned run, struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.
Weaver was 3-0 with a 1.71 ERA in four appearances, including three starts, in June. He’s now 3-0 with a 0.99 ERA through his first three starts in September.
Rookie left-hander Amir Garrett (3-8) was charged with four runs in four innings. He struck out seven and walked five.
The Griswold Tigers got their ground game running full bore last week against Riverside and hope to carry that momentum into a tough challenge against Southwest Valley on Friday night. The Tigers (1-2, 1-0) had four players top the 100-yard mark on the ground last week. Griswold Head Coach Andy Everett said they were finally able to get their full line together for a game and they played really well in the week 3 win.
Southwest Valley Head Coach Anthony Donahoo knows slowing down the run game is paramount against Griswold and he told his team the Tigers will be coming into the game with a lot of confidence after their performance last week.
The Timberwolves (3-0, 1-0) have been able to keep some balance in their offense through a tough stretch of games to open the season and Coach Donahoo says it all starts up front.
Senior quarterback Chance Cobb has thrown for four touchdowns and rushed for two more in the Timberwolves 3-0 start. Griswold Head Coach Andy Everett thinks Southwest Valley is talented across the board but had really high praise for Cobb.
The Timberwolves have strong numbers in their program and that allows them to platoon a few guys on either side of the ball to keep everyone fresh. Coach Everett says that will make them a tough team as the season moves along but more importantly he thinks his line will need to make proper reads to give the Tiger offense a chance to have success against a tough Timberwolf defense.

The Chiefs know they must focus on the Eagles and get over their upset on the road. Four of the team’s losses last season came after big wins _ and two of the losses were at home. The Eagles started their season with a win over Washington.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia drove in runs in the ninth inning as the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3. Abreu’s sacrifice fly scored Tim Anderson, who led off the inning with a single, took second on a wild pitch by Scott Alexander and stole third. Garcia’s single to center scored Yoan Moncada with the second run. The White Sox took two of three in the series.
