Park scores 3 times as Iowa State beats Akron 41-14

Sports

September 16th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — With his long hair, full beard and lanky build, Jacob Park looks more like a rock star than a quarterback. He was both on Saturday afternoon. Park passed for 317 yards and two touchdowns, including a 43-yarder to Marchie Murdock, as Iowa State pulled away in the second half for a 41-14 victory over Akron.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound junior completed 24 of 33 throws without an interception and also scored on a 14-yard run for the Cyclones (2-1), who equaled a school record by topping 40 points for the third straight game to start the season.

Sophomore David Montgomery rushed for 127 yards and a score as the Cyclones set a school mark by gaining 400 yards for the sixth game in a row. Park has thrown for more than 200 in all six — and over 300 in three of the last four — but insists that his team can be better.

Cyclones S Kamari Cotton-Moya (elbow) traveled to Akron, but was not in uniform. The senior co-captain was hurt on Sept. 9 against Iowa and remains listed as questionable.

UP NEXT

IOWA STATE: The Cyclones open Big 12 play by hosting Texas on Sept. 28. The Longhorns were a 27-6 winner in their last meeting on Oct. 15, 2016.

Southwest Valley rolls past Griswold

Sports

September 15th, 2017 by admin

The Southwest Valley Timberwolves hit a bounty of big plays on Friday night en route to a 48-0 win over the Griswold Tigers. After turning the ball over on downs on the opening possession of the game, the Timberwolves proceeded to score on their next 5 possessions to blow open the game. Southwest Valley had five scoring plays over 45 yards on the night.

Chance Cobb got the scoring started with a 56-yard touchdown pass to Addison Bull followed by a three yard touchdown run on a keeper on the next drive. Cobb hooked up with Grant Maurer for two other touchdown passes of 72 and 46 yards in the second quarter. Maurer would later return a Griswold fumble 82 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to give him three scores on the night.

The rest of the scoring for Southwest Valley came on two Aiden Gaule had touchdown runs of 91 and 14 yards.

Griswold had a 19 play drive end at the 3 yard line at the end of the half as they ran out of time to punch a score in. The Tigers would then put together a 15-play drive to open up the second half only to see that end with the fumble that was returned by Maurer for a touchdown.

The Tigers fall to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in Class A District 7.  The Timberwolves improve to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the district.

Bryant homers, keys big rally as Cubs pound Cardinals 8-2

Sports

September 15th, 2017 by Jim Field

CHICAGO (AP) — Kris Bryant had three hits, including his 27th homer, and the Chicago Cubs overcame the ejections of John Lackey and Willson Contreras on their way to an 8-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.

Bryant went deep in the fourth and singled twice in Chicago’s seven-run sixth, helping the NL Central leaders open a big weekend series on a winning note. The Cubs moved four games ahead of St. Louis.

Lackey and Contreras were thrown out with Chicago trailing 2-1 in the fifth. But after outscoring the New York Mets 39-14 in a three-game sweep, the Cubs got enough big hits to improve to 9-4 against the Cardinals this year.
