PITTSBURGH (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals stumbled against the Pirates for the second straight day, allowing home runs to Starling Marte and rookie Jordan Luplow in a stinging 4-1 loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday. St. Louis began the day 1 1/2 games behind Colorado for the NL’s second wild card. With the score 1-1, Pat Bostick singled against Seung Hwan Oh (1-6) leading off the fifth and Marte followed with his seventh home run. Luplow went deep an inning later off Brett Cecil.
Jameson Taillon (8-7) allowed one run and four hits in five innings. Five pitchers combined for hitless relief, with Felipe Rivero striking out two in a perfect ninth for his 19th save in 21 chances. Matt Carpenter hit his 22nd home run for St. Louis.

In boys action at the Harlan Community School District’s Cross County meet, Saturday, the Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson Yellowjackets took 1st place with their low team score of 58. The team had four of its members in the Top 12 at the event.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Juwan Johnson caught a seven-yard TD pass as time expired and fourth-ranked Penn State rallied to stun host Iowa 21-19 in the Big Ten opener for both teams. Saquon Barkley added 211 yards rushing and 94 yards receiving for the Nittany Lions, who outgained Iowa 579-273 but nearly blew a game that could’ve been crippling to their postseason hopes. Penn State went 80 yards on 12 plays to close out the game, and McSorley found Johnson in the end zone on fourth down.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Tanner Lee led Nebraska on a 97-yard scoring drive for the go-ahead touchdown after Rutgers returned an interception for a touchdown, and the Cornhuskers shook off the Scarlet Knights in the second half for a 27-17. The Huskers picked up a much-needed victory for coach Mike Riley two days after athletic director Shawn Eichorst was fired following last week’s humiliating home loss to Northern Illinois. Rutgers has lost 15 straight Big Ten games.
CHICAGO (AP) — Alex Gordon homered, Whit Merrifield drove in three runs and Danny Duffy pitched into the seventh inning to lead the Royals to an 8-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox, keeping Kansas City’s slim playoff hopes alive. Salvador Perez went 2 for 4 with a pair of run-scoring doubles. With eight games remaining, the Royals trail Minnesota by 4 ½ games for the second AL wild card. Duffy allowed two runs in six-plus innings for his first win since Aug. 22.
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Kerryon Johnson rushed for a career-high five touchdowns as No. 15 Auburn put an end to its recent offensive struggles in a 51-14 win over Missouri. Johnson, who had missed the previous two games with a hamstring injury, finished with 48 yards rushing on 18 carries _ falling one short of Carnell Williams’ school record of six rushing touchdowns in a game.
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Will Grier threw for 347 yards and accounted for four touchdowns, Justin Crawford ran for 125 yards and another score and West Virginia pulled away late to beat pesky Kansas 56-34. David Sills and Kennedy McKoy each scored twice for the Mountaineers, who overcame a 291-yard rushing performance by the Jayhawks’ Khalil Herbert.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Lance Lynn allowed eight runs in the first inning and the St. Louis Cardinals slipped up against the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-6. St. Louis entered the day 1 1/2 games behind Colorado, which plays San Diego on Saturday night, for the second NL wild card. The loss ended the Cardinals’ four-game winning streak. St. Louis remained five games behind the Cubs in the NL Central after Chicago lost to Milwaukee, which is a half-game ahead of the Cardinals.

(AP) — Scotty Gilkey threw two touchdown passes to Alexander Hollins and ran for another score to help Eastern Illinois beat Southeast Missouri State 19-16 in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams. Gilkey completed 9 of 20 for 142 yards passing and added 26 carries for 98 yards while Hollins had seven receptions for 118 yards for Eastern Illinois.

Akrum Wadley had a 70-yard TD reception midway through the fourth quarter and a 35-yard touchdown run with 1:42 left to put the Hawkeyes (3-1, 0-1) ahead 19-15. Penn State went 80 yards on 12 plays to close out the game, and Trace McSorley found Johnson in a crowded end zone on fourth down. McSorley finished with 284 yards passing on 48 tries.
Wadley had 80 yards rushing and 75 yards receiving and Nate Stanley threw for 191 yards and two TDs for Iowa. The Hawkeyes’ defense, led by preseason All-American linebacker Josey Jewell, played its heart out. Wadley then put Iowa in position to make a major statement nationally, but the Nittany Lions simply made one more play than they did.
UP NEXT: Iowa plays at Michigan State next weekend.

Brock Reichardt’s 1-yard scoring run broke the game open in the third and Drake scored again on its next possession.
Drake had three interceptions and held Valapariso’s conference-leading offense to 294 yards, including 184 passing. The Bulldogs offense rolled up 567 total yards, including 122 on the ground. The Bulldogs hold a 22-3 series record against the Crusaders and its winning streak is the second longest active streak for most consecutive wins in an uninterrupted series. Penn has the longest active streak with 20 straight over Columbia.
Kyle Cartales ran for two touchdowns for Valapariso (1-3, 0-1). Jimmy Seewald was 17 of 31 for 173 yards and two interceptions.

The ASHTW Vikings improved to 5-0 on Friday night with a big win over the Treynor Cardinals 58-0. The Vikings set the tone from the outset travelling 74 yards in 9 plays capped off by a 15 yard touchdown run by RJ Harris. The Vikings took the ball away from Treynor on the second play of their opening drive. One play later Harris hooked up with Gabe Pauley for a 31 yard touchdown pass to make it 12-0 and the Vikings never looked back.
AHSTW lead 52-0 at halftime as Kyle Brannan connected on a 21-yard field goal as time ran out in the first half. Treynor didn’t have a first down until late in the first half.
Homecoming King RJ Harris ran for 2 touchdowns and threw for three more. Gabe Pauley had 2 rushing touchdowns, and 1 receiving on the night. The Vikings improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the district.
The Cardinals fall to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the district.
