Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers remain the top 2 teams in the latest AP Pro32 poll. Kansas City received all 12 first-place votes for 384 points in balloting by media members who regularly cover the NFL. The Philadelphia Eagles jumped up to No. 3.

ATLANTA (AP) — Defending champion Stewart Hagestad was eliminated on the first day of match play at the U.S. Mid-Amateur by a salesman playing in his first USGA championship. Dusty Drenth of Davenport, Iowa, fell two down through six holes before rallying to close out Hagestad on the 17th hole. It was a rare lowlight this year for Hagestad, who was low amateur at the Masters.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa says athletic director Gary Barta is taking an extended medical leave to fight prostate cancer. The school announced that Barta is set to undergo surgery for the disease, adding that he intends to return to as soon as he can. Iowa deputy athletic director Barbara Burke will serve as the department leader in Barta’s absence.

ISU’s Kempt earns Davey O’Brien weekly award

Sports

October 10th, 2017 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior quarterback Kyle Kempt was named the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week, announced today by the Davey O’Brien Foundation.

Kempt was sensational in his first career start, leading Iowa State to one of its greatest victories in school history in a 38-31 win over No. 3 Oklahoma in Norman. It was the first road win over a top-five team in school history.

A native of Massillon, Ohio, Kempt completed 18-of-24 passes for 343 yards and three TDs. He also completed a key two-point conversion pass to Allen Lazard.

His three TD passes were all after intermission, helping the Cyclones erase a 24-13 second-half deficit. Kempt’s 25-yard corner end zone toss to Lazard proved to be the game-winner with 2:19 left in the contest.

The walk-on had passing strikes of 57, 54 and 46 yards, three of the top-four longest plays on the season for the Cyclones.

Kempt is the first Cyclone QB to win the Davey O’Brien weekly award.
