Iowa State (5-2, 3-1 Big 12) remained in the midseason chase for the conference’s new championship game. Five league teams began play on Saturday with 2-1 records and trailed TCU by a game in the standings.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Cyclones, who might elevate into the Top 25 after receiving 28 votes in the Week 8 poll, return home to host No. 4 TCU.

Thorson 1-yard run gives Northwestern 17-10 OT win over Iowa

October 21st, 2017 by Ric Hanson

EVENSTON, Ill. (AP) — Quarterback Clayton Thorson scored on a 1-yard run and Northwestern rallied from a sluggish first half for a 17-10 overtime victory over Iowa on Saturday.

Thorson’s score was set up by a 23-yard reception by running back Justin Jackson, who broke three tackles on the play to give the Wildcats (4-3, 2-2 in the Big Ten) a first down at the 1-yard line. Following Northwestern’s score, Iowa moved the ball to the 18-yard line, but Nate Stanley’s pass for Noah Fant on a fourth-and-3 play fell incomplete, ending the game.

Thorson finished 21 of 36 for 192 yards. Jackson rushed for 93 yards rushing on 25 attempts and had five receptions for 38 yards. Jackson now has 4,732 career yards to pass Anthony Davis (Wisconsin) for eighth place on the Big Ten’s all-time rushing list.

Stanley was 19 of 33 for 223 yards with a touchdown and an interception and Akrum Wadley rushed for 90 yards on 26 carries to lead Iowa (4-3, 1-3). The Hawkeyes tied the score at 10 on kicker Miguel Recinos’ 48-yard field goal with 1:30 remaining in regulation. Iowa won the coin toss before overtime and decided to play defense first.

UP NEXT: The Hawkeyes host Minnesota next Saturday.

F-M rides defense to playoff spot with 42-12 win over CAM

Sports

October 21st, 2017 by admin

The Fremont-Mills Knights earned a playoff spot with a 42-12 win over the CAM Cougars on Friday night, and they did it with a big defensive effort. The Knights held the Cougars to just 12 yards of offense in the first half and didn’t allow a Cougar first down before the break.

Despite the lack of offense, the CAM defense helped the Cougars hang around. CAM forced 4 turnovers on downs for the Knights, all in their own territory in the first half.

CAM was able to get the first score of the second half on a Thomas Hensley pass to Darien Burnison. That cut the lead to 21-6 but the Knights would answer right back on the next possession. F-M scored on a four play drive with Mason Vanatta scoring on a 4 yard run that was set up by a 56 yard run by Jaeger Powers. The Knights would connect on a 2pt conversion after that score to extend the lead out to 29-6. That took control of the game for good.

Mason Vanatta had two passing and two rushing touchdowns in the win for F-M. Jaeger Powers rushed for 291 yards and one score.

CAM star quarterback Thomas Hensley had one passing and one rushing score to put him at 51 touchdowns on the season. His outstanding career comes to a close with over 5,700 yards passing and rushing combined.

Fremont-Mills improved to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in district play.  They become the runner-up in 8-Man 7 and qualify for the playoffs.

CAM ends their season at 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the district.
