Trojan hurdler Reed will continue career at Iowa

Sports

November 10th, 2017 by admin

Atlantic senior hurdler Gratt Reed will continue his track career at the University of Iowa. Reed signed with Iowa on Friday at the Atlantic High School with parents and coaches in attendance. Gratt talked about how it feels to commit to Iowa.

Gratt is coming off a Junior season in which he placed 4th in the 110M Hurdles and 6th in the 400M Hurdles at the State Meet. Reed has continued to work hard during the off-season and set a personal record time of 14.25 in the semifinals of the USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Lawrence, KS.

Reed attended a clinic in Iowa City along with Atlantic Assistant Coach Jordan Mullen, who is a former Iowa Hurdler, and got noticed by the staff there. Coach Joey Woody called Gratt a couple months later and invited him up for a visit. He made the decision shortly after that visit to become a Hawkeye.

Atlantic Head Coach Alan Jenkins said Reed has earned everything that he is getting with the hard work he has put in. He knows that he can still reach some lofty goals this next season. Reed talked about the work he has been doing to prepare for this next season at Atlantic.

Reed will join an Iowa team coached by Joey Woody that placed 17th at the Men’s NCAA Outdoor Championships last year.  He plans to study Education at Iowa.

Atlantic grappler McConkey inks with UNI

Sports

November 10th, 2017 by admin

Atlantic senior John McConkey signed on Friday with the University of Northern Iowa to continue his wrestling and academic career. McConkey said he chose the Panthers over Nebraska, Northern Illinois, and Coe College.

McConkey went 53-4 during his junior season and was the state runner-up at Heavyweight in Class 2A. He fell to Tristan Wirfs of Mt. Vernon in the title match 3-2. McConkey said being so close to a state title has motivated him to work harder and he is currently the 9th ranked heavyweight in the nation by FloWrestling. McConkey talked about improving in the sport after only starting when he was in 8th grade.

McConkey has been a successful athlete in a number of sports for Atlantic but he said the decision to wrestle at the next level came easily.

Atlantic Head Coach Tim Duff said John’s work ethic has got him to the position he is now with a chance to wrestle Division I.

John will join a strong recruiting class for UNI with a number of other top ranked wrestlers. The Panthers were 11-3 in duals last year and placed 18th at the NCAA Championships last year with two All-Americans.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost broke a pelvis and several ribs during a fall on his property in Georgia. The team says the 62-year-old manager was working on a deer stand that gave way. Yost is an avid hunter. He underwent surgery in Atlanta and was to be transferred to a rehab facility. The team says he will need a wheelchair for a short time.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — No. 25 Iowa is on a roll as it heads into Camp Randall Stadium for a crucial Big Ten West division game against No. 6 Wisconsin. The confident Hawkeyes beat up on Ohio State last week. Now they face their second straight Top 10 opponent in the unbeaten Badgers, who can clinch a trip to the Big Ten title game with a victory.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs were Super Bowl favorites during a dynamic 5-0 start. They’ve lost three of their past four heading into their week off. The offense that was so good earlier in the season has slowed down, and lately has been unable to mask a struggling defense. But coach Andy Reid still has confidence in the AFC West leaders, who will face a much weaker schedule down the stretch.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Oklahoma State and Iowa State can still reach the Big 12 title game. But Saturday’s meeting might be an elimination game for two teams coming off losses that altered the trajectory of their season. The 12th-ranked Cowboys and 24th-ranked Cyclones are now tied with West Virginia for third in the conference behind Oklahoma and TCU, both 5-1 in the Big 12.
