Missouri wins despite Porter’s injury

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — The highly anticipated debut of Michael Porter Jr. was brief. The Missouri Tigers did just fine without him Friday night in a 74-59 victory over Iowa State in the season opener. Porter, considered one of the top two recruits in the nation, played just two minutes and scored two points before taking a seat on the bench with an ice pack on his left hip. A team spokesman said he “tweaked” the hip and was held out for the rest of the game as a precaution.

Kevin Puryear led Missouri with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting.Nick Weiler-Babb led the Cyclones with 14 points, and Zoran Talley Jr. added 11.

After qualifying for the NCAA Tournament six straight years, the Cyclones are rebuilding with just one player — sophomore forward Solomon Young. ISU was picked ninth out of 10 teams in the Big 12 preseason coaches’ poll.

Iowa State makes its home debut Monday against Milwaukee.

Hawkeyes drill Chicago State 95-62 in opener

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Freshman Luka Garza scored 16 points in his debut, Isaiah Moss added 14 points and Iowa pounded Chicago State 95-62 on Friday night. Tyler Cook and Jordan Bohannon added 12 points apiece for the Hawkeyes, who shot 59.6 percent in their first game without Peter Jok, the Big Ten’s leading scorer a year ago.

Iowa closed out the first half on a 12-2 run to jump ahead 52-27 at halftime. The Hawkeyes played 11 guys in the first half — with eight of them logging at least five minutes — and went 7 of 14 from 3-point range. Cook’s alley-oop dunk pushed that lead to 68-37 early in the second half, and coach Fran McCaffery went to the bench after that.

Iowa freshman guard Connor McCaffery, the coach’s son, sprained his ankle in practice this week and spent his college debut in street clothes. McCaffery made a last-minute decision not to redshirt after guard Christian Williams abruptly decided to transfer and is expected to be in Iowa’s rotation. Nicholas Baer (broken pinky finger) also sat out the opener. He’s expected to miss about a month.

The Hawkeyes struggled at times on defense, especially in transition in the first half. That’s to be expected of a team filled largely with underclassmen. But playing time for a bench that could end up being seven players deep will likely be doled out to the guys most committed to playing strong defense.

Iowa hosts Alabama State on Sunday.

Maye helps No. 9 UNC beat Northern Iowa 86-69 in opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Luke Maye had a career-high 26 points to go with 10 rebounds in No. 9 North Carolina’s season-opening 86-69 win against Northern Iowa on Friday night. Freshman Garrison Brooks added 14 points for the reigning national champions, who opened the season without Final Four Most Outstanding Player Joel Berry II and Pittsburgh graduate transfer Cameron Johnson due to injuries.

Berry is recovering from a broken bone in his right hand that was expected to keep him out about four weeks, though he dressed out and warmed up with the team during shootaround. Johnson has a sprained neck. Regardless, the Tar Heels shot 50 percent and blew open a 14-point halftime lead to as many as 31 points down the stretch.

Spencer Haldeman had 15 points to lead Northern Iowa, which had upset the top-ranked Tar Heels at home in November 2015. But the Panthers never came close to duplicating that magic.

The Panthers are picked to finish second in the Missouri Valley Conference, but this game just got away from them. Northern Iowa relied on the 3-point shot and made 13 of 28, though it got nothing inside the arc and only got to the foul line nine times.

The Panthers host Alcorn State on Monday.

Trojan hurdler Reed will continue career at Iowa

Atlantic senior hurdler Gratt Reed will continue his track career at the University of Iowa. Reed signed with Iowa on Friday at the Atlantic High School with parents and coaches in attendance. Gratt talked about how it feels to commit to Iowa.

Gratt is coming off a Junior season in which he placed 4th in the 110M Hurdles and 6th in the 400M Hurdles at the State Meet. Reed has continued to work hard during the off-season and set a personal record time of 14.25 in the semifinals of the USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Lawrence, KS.

Reed attended a clinic in Iowa City along with Atlantic Assistant Coach Jordan Mullen, who is a former Iowa Hurdler, and got noticed by the staff there. Coach Joey Woody called Gratt a couple months later and invited him up for a visit. He made the decision shortly after that visit to become a Hawkeye.

Atlantic Head Coach Alan Jenkins said Reed has earned everything that he is getting with the hard work he has put in. He knows that he can still reach some lofty goals this next season. Reed talked about the work he has been doing to prepare for this next season at Atlantic.

Reed will join an Iowa team coached by Joey Woody that placed 17th at the Men’s NCAA Outdoor Championships last year.  He plans to study Education at Iowa.
