CLASS 2A

Saturday, November 12

Williamsburg 31, Wahlert Catholic, Dubuque 7

Williamsburg out-gained Wahlert Catholic 412 yards to 229 yards on offense and picked up the dominating win. Carson Huedepohl went 10-13 passsing fro 207 yards and two touchdowns with 1 interception. Derek Weisskopf hauled in 8 of those passes with 164 yards and 2 touchdowns. Williamsburg improved to 12-0. Wahlert Catholic ends the year at 9-3.

Central Lyon/George-Little Rock 37, OABCIG 14

Central Lyon/George-Little Rock scored the first 23 points of the game and rolled to the 2A championship game with the win over OABCIG. The Lions piled up 472 yards of offense led by 284 yards and three scores rushing from Zach Lutmer. The Lions advance to the title game with a mark of 12-0. OABCIG ends the season at 10-2.

CLASS 3A

Saturday, November 12

Harlan 49, ADM 35

The Harlan Cyclones will return to the Class 3A title game after pulling out a win over ADM for the second time this season. The Cyclones outscored the Tigers 14-0 in the third quarter to make the difference. Aidan Hall had a monster game with 240 yards rushing with 4 touchdowns to go along with 74 yards receiving and another score. Both teams were over 440 yards of offense in the game. Harlan improves to 11-1 and will defend their title next Saturday. ADM ends the season at 10-2 with both losses to the Cyclones.

Mount Vernon 14, Humboldt 6

Mount Vernon slugged their way to the 3A championship with a 14-6 win over Humboldt. Joey Rhomberg scored on a 4-yard run with 11:55 left to give Mount Vernon a 14-3 lead at that point. Henry Ryan had 103 yards on the ground to lead the Mustangs. Mount Vernon heads to the championship with a 12-0 record. Humboldt ends the year at 10-2.

Missouri woman arrested in Fremont County following a suspicious vehicle call

(Sidney, Iowa) – Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope reports that at around 1-p.m. today (Saturday, 11/12/22), Fremont County deputies were called to the area of 275th Street and Bluff Road near Hamburg for suspicious vehicle parked in the roadway.

Deputes made contact with a woman from Watson, Missouri, 38-year-old Elizabeth Craft. A records check revealed Craft had numerous felony warrants for her arrest out of the State of Kansas.

She was is being held without bond, pending extradition to Kansas.

McCreedy finishes 11th at NJCAA Cross Country Championships

Atlantic native and current Iowa Central runner Taylor McCreedy finished 11th place in the Women’s DI 5000M at the NJCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning. McCreedy ran a time of 18:57.6 and was just 1:10 off the top spot.

Iowa Central finished 5th in the team standings with 199 points. Southern Idaho was the team champion with 61 points.

Iowa Western runner Mercy Biwott was the individual runner-up with a time of 18:05.8

Iowa men’s hoops wallops North Carolina A&T

The Iowa men’s basketball team erupted offensively for a 112-71 win over North Carolina A&T on Friday night. Four Hawkeyes finished in double figures: Keegan Murray 22, Patrick McCaffery 21, Payton Sandfort 17, and Filip Rebraca 12. McCaffery’s 21 are a new career high.

Iowa committed just 4 turnovers in the game and 12 different players scored 3 points or more. The Hawks improved to 2-0 on the young season.

Next up Iowa will visit Seton Hall on Wednesday for the Gavitt Games. Tipoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. and we’ll have coverage on the Hawkeye Radio Network starting at 5:30 p.m. that evening.

Omaha man arrested in Fremont County

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of an Omaha man on Friday afternoon following a traffic stop on I-29. At approximately 1:18 p.m. Deputies stopped a vehicle for speeding near the 3-mile marker of Interstate 29. The driver provided a false name to Deputies but was later identified as 23-year-old Raymond A’mahd Patterson of Omaha, NE.

He was placed under arrest, and provided a second false name to both Deputies and jail staff. He was found to have an active warrant for his arrest in Nebraska. He was charged with two counts of Providing False Information to Law Enforcement and Fugitive from Justice. Patterson was held without bond pending Iowa charges and extradition to Nebraska.

The Iowa DOT Motor Vehicle Enforcement assisted the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office with the arrest.

Reynolds participates in State Swim Meet

Trojan LogoAtlantic’s Alexes Reynolds competed in the preliminary round of the 2022 Girls State Swimming and Diving Meet on Friday at the Marshalltown YMCA/YWCA.

Reynolds finished sixth in her heat of the 200Y Freestyle with a time of 1:59.13. That put her in 20th place overall.

She also competed in the 500Y Freestyle and finished 7th in the final heat with a time of 5:23.43. That time put her in 21st place.

The top 16 swimmers advanced on to the finals on Saturday.

CLASS 1A

Friday, November 11

Van Meter 48, West Branch 17

Van Meter outscored West Branch 21-0 in the second quarter to advance and continue to defend their 1A title. The Bulldogs had two touchdown runs and a fumble recovery for a score in that key stretch. Van Meter piled up an impressive 472 yards of offense by the end of the game and were led by a 191 yard rushing performance by Ben Gordon. Gordon ran for two scores and caught another. Van Meter heads back to the title game with a mark of 11-1. West Branch ends their season at 11-1.

West Sioux, Hawarden 47, Underwood 7

West Sioux got the offense rolling early and piled up 481 yards on their way to a win over Underwood. The Falcons were led by a very efficient day from quarterback Dylan Wiggins who wen 21 of 23 passing for 232 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Falcons used a team effort on the ground with three rushers over 70 yards and Brady Lynott hauled in 10 passes for 106 yards and a score. Underwood converted just 8 first downs in the game and gained 181 yards in their first semifinal appearance in 20 years. The Eagles end the season at 11-1. West Sioux improved to 11-1 and move on to a championship rematch from last season with Van Meter.

CLASS 5A

Friday, November 11

Valley, West Des Moines 22, Dowling Catholic, WDM 21

West Des Moines Valley rallied from 14 points down in the fourth quarter to beat Dowling Catholic 22-21. Damon Head scored on a 12-yard run with 5:01 left in the game to make it 21-14. The Tigers then scored again with 30 seconds left on a 2-yard run by Ayden Price. Rather than kick the tying extra point the Tigers went for 2 and converted on a pass from Michael Provenza to Zay Robinson to win the game. Valley continues their remarkable postseason run going from 5-4 to 8-4 and into the title game. Dowling ends the season at 10-2.

Southeast Polk 35, Johnston 14

Southeast Polk will get a chance to defend their title in 5A after dominating Johnston in the semis. The Rams led 21-0 by half led by two touchdown runs by Abu Sama. He would score once more in the third quarter and finished with 93 yards in the game. Harrison Gibson added 98 yards rushing for the Rams. Southeast Polk improved to 11-1 and Johnston ends the year at 8-4.

JIM HEADLEE, 74, of Atlantic died Wednesday, November 9th at Cass Health in Atlantic. Funeral services for JIM HEADLEE will be held on Saturday, November 19th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Roland Funeral Service in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Burial with military honors by the Atlantic Color Guard will be in the Atlantic Cemetery. Classic cars are welcome in the procession to the cemetery. The service will be recorded and available on the funeral home website by noon on Sunday, November 20th.

Visitation with the family present will be held on Friday, November 18th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Memorials may be directed to the family for designation at a later date.
