Padres beat Cardinals, lock up fifth straight series win

Sports

June 14th, 2018 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Padres manager Andy Green is trying not to get too excited about San Diego’s run of success. His players seem to be enjoying it, though.

Eric Lauer carried a shutout into the sixth inning, Manuel Margot had three hits and the Padres beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 on Wednesday night to win their fifth straight series.

San Diego has won 11 of 15 games, including five of its last seven. It’s the first time the Padres have won five consecutive series since 2010.

“It means we’re playing good baseball and that’s the most important thing,” said shortstop Freddy Galvis, who sparked the attack with a two-run double in the first inning.

Marcell Ozuna homered for the Cardinals, who have lost three of four.

The Padres took two of three in a stadium where they had struggled. St. Louis had won 30 of its previous 42 home games against San Diego.

Lauer (3-4) gave up two runs and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. He’s 3-0 when getting two or more runs of support.

Brad Hand recorded his 21st save in 23 opportunities. He got Jedd Gyorko to ground into a double play after hitting Yadier Molina to start the ninth.

St. Louis starter Luke Weaver (3-6) gave up four runs and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings. He has just one win over his last 11 starts.

UP NEXT:

Cardinals: RHP Michael Wacha (8-1, 2.47) face LHP Jon Lester (7-2, 2.22) in the first of a three-game home series against the Chicago Cubs on Friday. Wacha has won his last eight decisions against the Cubs.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Eric Lauer carried a shutout into the sixth inning, Manuel Margot had three hits and the San Diego Padres beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 to win their fifth straight series. Freddy Galvis drove in two first-inning runs for San Diego, which has won five of seven. The Padres hadn’t won five consecutive series since 2010. Marcell Ozuna homered for the Cardinals, who have lost three of four.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyler Mahle allowed three hits while pitching into the seventh, Adam Duvall hit a ninth-inning grand slam and the Cincinnati Reds beat the skidding Kansas City Royals 7-0. Mahle allowed only one runner to touch second base in 6 1/3 innings, matching his career longest start.

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes II has embraced Kansas City as few athletes before him, whether it’s throwing out the first pitch for the Royals or giving the command to start the engines at Kansas Speedway. He’s already beloved just one year after the Chiefs selected him in the first round of the draft. Now, he needs to win some games.

UNDATED (AP) — Washington is making its first ever trip to Omaha for the College World Series after finally fulfilling the promise of a program that at times has featured great players and great teams but never put together a good enough postseason run. The Huskies face Mississippi State in the first round on Saturday. Washington is the last baseball-playing member of the Pac-12 to reach the College World Series.

Hosmer homers, bullpen shines, Padres beat Cardinals 4-2

Sports

June 13th, 2018 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Padres bullpen has stepped up to fill a hole in San Diego’s rotation.

Eric Hosmer homered, San Diego’s bullpen took a perfect game into the sixth inning and the Padres beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 on Tuesday night for their 10th win in 14 games.

This was the third bullpen game for San Diego this season, all since left-hander Joey Lucchesi went down with a right hip strain.

Padres reliever Matt Strahm started the bullpen game and retired nine batters on 36 pitches, including four strikeouts. Adam Cimber (3-2) retired the next six with two strikeouts before Harrison Bader broke up the perfect game with an infield single in the sixth. Bader was promptly erased in a double play.

Brad Hand pitched the ninth for his 20th save.

Hosmer drove the first pitch of the fourth inning to center field to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. It was his second home run in three games.

Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas (7-2) struck out five in six innings and walked none. He has walked one or less in all seven of his home starts this season, but St. Louis still lost for the second time in three games.

Marcell Ozuna’s RBI single snapped the Padres’ shutout bid in the seventh. Ozuna has driven in five runs in his last four games.

UP NEXT

Cardinals RHP Luke Weaver (3-5, 4.35 ERA) will get the start in the series finale against the Padres and LHP Eric Lauer (2-4, 6.64 ERA) on Wednesday at 7:15 CDT. Weaver has not allowed a run in 12 innings (two career starts) against San Diego. Lauer gave up six runs in 2 1/3 innings against St. Louis on May 11.

Challenging schedule awaits Iowa State

Sports

June 13th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

One college football preview magazine expects Iowa State to make more progress next season even though the win total may not show it. Phil Steele’s College Football Preview expects Iowa State to be in bowl contention once again against a difficult schedule. ISU posted upsets over Oklahoma and TCU in 2017 in posting an 8-5 record that included a win over Memphis in the Liberty Bowl. (Click on the left side of any sound bar to listen to the clip)

Steele says this Iowa State team does not have as much experience and another factor this season may be luck. The Cyclones were a plus-10 in turnover margin last season and Steele says history has proven that turnover margins tend to even out.

Steele feels Iowa State’s defense will be solid and he expects the offense to make progress.

Steele says David Montgomery and the run game will be more effective.

Iowa State opens the season at home on September first against South Dakota State. Steele’s College Football Preview will hit the news stands on June 26.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Despite setting records last fall, Iowa tight end Noah Fant went largely unnoticed outside of the Big Ten West. That shouldn’t be the case in 2018. Fant will return for his junior season with the Hawkeyes as one of the nation’s most intriguing pro prospects. The 6-foot-5, 241-pound Fant has size, speed, athleticism and a knack for finding the end zone.

The Brewers are back atop the NL Central after Travis Shaw and Chase Anderson led a 4-0 win over the second-place Cubs. Shaw provided a pair of two-run doubles to back Anderson, who limited Chicago to one hit over seven innings before the bullpen finished up a two-hitter. Tyler Chatwood gave up the four runs over five innings as the Cubs fell a half-game behind Milwaukee.

The Cardinals’ 4-2 loss to the Padres leaves St. Louis three games behind the Brewers. Eric Hosmer hit a solo homer and A.J. Ellis added a two-run single while San Diego scored three times in the fourth inning off Miles Mikolas (MY’-koh-lahs). The Padres have won 10 of their last 14 games.

Joey Votto lined a tiebreaking, base-loaded triple in the 10th inning to send the Reds past the Royals, 5-1. Tucker Barnhardt slammed a solo homer and Cincinnati starter Sal Romano lowered his ERA to 5.67 by holding the Royals to a run and four hits over eight frames.

Iowa TE Noah Fant preps for bigger role in ’18

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Despite setting records last fall, Iowa tight end Noah Fant went largely unnoticed outside of the Big Ten West. That shouldn’t be the case in 2018. Fant will return for his junior season with the Hawkeyes as one of the nation’s most intriguing pro prospects at his position. The 6-foot-5, 241-pound Fant has size, speed, athleticism and a knack for finding the end zone. Fant caught 30 passes a year ago, 11 for touchdowns. That was a school record for tight ends, and his 16.5 yards per catch led the nation for his position.

The Hawkeyes are expecting either bigger numbers next fall, despite the fact that defenses will be more focused on shutting Fant down. “He’s a great athlete — and he pushes himself,” junior quarterback Nata Stanley said. “He works hard. There (are) a lot of things that he’s tried to improve on.”

Even with all the modern tweaks that second-year coordinator Brian Ferentz has brought to Iowa’s once-stagnant offense, the Hawkeyes remain committed to a physical and balanced attack. It demands a lot from tight ends, and Iowa has had its share of good ones under 20-year coach Kirk Ferentz. Fant might be the most gifted one yet.

It was obvious that Fant had a chance to be special as a prep star for Omaha South in Nebraska, where he was a first-team all-state tight end and defensive end while also running track and playing basketball. Iowa used him as a true freshman, which is rarely does at any spot on the line, and by his sophomore year he had earned a starting job.

Fant’s first game in 2017 was a sign of things to come, as he caught two passes and wound up in the end zone after each of them. Fant would also record multiple TD receptions in wins over Ohio State and Nebraska — the latter performance especially painful for Huskers fans who hated losing a local kid to a border rival like Iowa.

“My goals are to help my team as much as possible. Last year, that involved me catching passes and scoring some touchdowns and stuff like that,” Fant said. “This year, if it involves me blocking more, or whatever our offense needs me to do, then that’s my goal to do.”

Following the NFL draft, numerous publications posting mock drafts for 2019 had Fant listed as a possible first-round selection. Though Fant said he didn’t pay much attention to such speculation, the pieces are in place for him to have the kind of year that might allow him to leave early. Iowa’s wide receivers remain a relatively inexperienced bunch, and the Hawkeyes will also be breaking in a pair of new running backs. Fant will enter 2018 as Iowa’s most versatile skill position player, and in Brian Ferentz — who coached stars Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez as the tight ends coach in New England — he has a coordinator skilled in getting players like him open.

Fant has been doing his part in offseason workouts; he recently broke the school record for tight ends in the vertical jump at 42 inches. The previous record was held by San Francisco’s George Kittle, a player Fant could be joining in the NFL sooner rather than later. “My plan was to come here and do big things with the opportunity that I had. I feel like my career so far has gone all right. I can keep improving on it though,” Fant said.
