Mark Becker appeal denied in murder of Ed Thomas

News, Sports

June 20th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Court of Appeals has upheld the conviction of the man convicted of killing Aplington-Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas. Mark Becker shot and killed Thomas in the high school weight room in front of several witnesses on June 24th of 2009. Becker’s lawyer used an insanity defense, but he was found guilty of murder. Becker appealed his conviction saying his lawyer was ineffective for failing to seek a change of venue and failing to present evidence of pre-trial publicity.

The Court of Appeals ruled the lawyer’s decision to forgo a change of venue was sound trial strategy given the available information. The ruling says pre-trial publicity was widespread but many accounts favored the defense’s claim of insanity. The ruling also says the positive interactions between the families and the Thomas family’s plea for understanding could have also positively influenced jurors toward the defense.

Becker is now 33-years-old and is being held at the Corrections Department Oakdale facility.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Major League Baseball regular-season game will be played in Omaha the week the 2019 College World Series opens, The Associated Press has learned. MLB and the NCAA have been working to arrange a game as a kickoff event to the CWS, a person close to the situation told the AP on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss details. A news conference with MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred was scheduled for Thursday at TD Ameritrade Park, the host site for the CWS.

The move would be similar to the regular-season games played in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, in conjunction with the Little League World Series.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cole Hamels allowed four hits over seven innings, Delino DeShields doubled home two runs and the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 to extend their winning streak to a season-high four games. The Royals have lost eight straight, matching their season high, and 14 of 15.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Matt Carpenter hit a tiebreaking solo homer with two out in the ninth, helping the St. Louis Cardinals edge the Philadelphia Phillies 7-6. Carpenter also had a tying two-run double in St. Louis’ four-run seventh. Tommy Pham homered and singled for the Cardinals, and Kolten Wong also went deep.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa wrestler Sam Stoll has been hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries after he was accidentally shot in the knee early Tuesday. Iowa City police responded to a report of a gunshot victim who showed up at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics shortly before 5 a.m. Police say a preliminary investigation found Stoll was shot by mistake in a resident and several people were present.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alcides Escobar’s streak of making 406 consecutive starts as the Kansas City Royals shortstop is about to end. Manager Ned Yost said he plans to play Adalberto Mondesi, 22, a couple of days a week at shortstop. Escobar, 31, has been the Royals everyday shortstop since 2011 after being acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers as part of the Zack Greinke trade.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Jackson Kowar struck out a career-high 13 in 6 2/3 innings as defending national champion Florida eliminated Texas from the College World Series with a 6-1 win. Kowar held the Longhorns scoreless on five hits. He mixed his changeup with a fastball still touching the mid-90s deep into his season-high 121-pitch afternoon. Jonathan India hit his 21st home run to break the game open in the sixth inning.

UNDATED (AP) — Joe Bugel and Emmitt Thomas are winners of the 2018 Paul “Dr. Z” Zimmerman Award given by the Professional Football Writers of America for work as an NFL assistant coach. Bugel is best known for building Washington’s famous Hogs offensive line unit as the Redskins won three Super Bowls. Chiefs defensive backs coach Thomas made the Pro Football Hall of Famer as a player and is in his 38th season as an NFL assistant coach.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Texas Rangers have optioned rookie left-hander Yohander Mendez back to Triple-A Round Rock for violating team rules. Mendez was supposed to start Wednesday’s series finale against Kansas City. But right-hander Austin Bibens-Dirkx will get the ball instead. General manager Jon Daniels says at least one other player was involved, but his discipline will be handled in-house. He says the incident is “not criminal, nothing involving MLB or the police.”

An Iowa City police department spokesman says 22-year-old Sam Stoll was taken to University Hospitals at 4:37 this morning for treatment of a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his knee.

Sergeant Derek Frank says several people were at an Iowa City residence when someone shot a gun and it hit Stoll in the knee. He says they are still trying to sort out exactly what happened prior to the shooting.

The University of Iowa website shows Stoll is from Kasson, Minnesota and will be a redhshirt senior on the Hawkeye wrestling squad after finishing 5th at heavyweight in the national tournament last season.

Oregon St. rallies after delay to beat Huskies 14-5 at CWS

Sports

June 19th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Oregon State kept things loose in the clubhouse during a weather delay that stretched to 4 ½ hours at the College World Series. Reserve outfielder Joe Casey entertained teammates by stuffing 30 pieces of gum into his mouth, a party game known as “Mafia” broke out and the tunes were cranked up.
When it was time to return to the field, the Beavers were all business.

Kyle Nobach hit a three-run homer to put Oregon State in control in the seventh inning, Kevin Abel pitched four strong innings of relief and Oregon State sent Pac-12 rival Washington home from the College World Series with a 14-5 win on Monday night.

“Crazy game. Long day,” Beavers coach Pat Casey said. “I thought our guys came out really prepared after the rain delay. We were kind of scuffling out of the chute. Really appreciate the way they hung with it and got themselves a win.” The Beavers erased early deficits, starting their comeback just before the teams were pulled off the field because of lightning near TD Ameritrade Park.

Oregon State (50-11-1), the No. 3 national seed, was coming off a loss to North Carolina in its CWS opener and still must win three more games to reach the best-of-three finals. Washington (35-26) went two games and out in its first CWS. Oregon State avoided going 0-2 at a CWS for the first time in five appearances since 2005.

Oregon State will play another elimination game Wednesday against the North Carolina-Mississippi State loser. That game was postponed until this (Tuesday) morning because of the long delay in the Beavers’ game and the threat of more rain Monday night.
