UNI holds off Old Dominion at Paradise Jam

Sports

November 19th, 2018 by admin

A.J. Green scored 15 points, including a key basket down the stretch, and Northern Iowa held off Old Dominion for a 54-53 victory Monday in a consolation game at the Paradise Jam tournament.

With the Panthers (3-2) ahead 29-21 with 19:33 left, the Monarchs (2-3) rallied to tie the game four times, the last at 50-all on Kalu Ezikpe’s layup with 2:15 left. But Green hit a jumper 22 seconds later to put Northern Iowa back in the lead for good

After Old Dominion turned the ball over on its next possession, Isaiah Brown made a pair of free throws with 17 seconds remaining to give the Panthers some breathing room.

Ahmad Caver, who finished with a game-high 24 points for the Monarchs, hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.

November 19th, 2018 by admin

IRVING, Texas – Senior guard Bridget Carleton nabbed her first Big 12 Player of the Week honor of the season, the league announced Monday. Today’s honor marks the 11th Big 12 weekly honor for the Chatham, Ontario, Canada native, which ranks first in school history and tied for seventh in Big 12 history.

Carleton had a banner week, leading Iowa State to the program’s first Preseason WNIT Championship with a win over No. 24 Miami. Carleton scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and added three assists, three blocks and three steals. On Tuesday, Carleton’s late-game heroics gave Iowa State the semifinal win over Auburn, 67-64. With just nine seconds remaining Carleton, put ISU up 66-64. On the other end, she denied Auburn’s game-tying shot with a monster block to give ISU the win.

On the week she averaged 15.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists. For her efforts, she earned the Preseason WNIT Tournament MVP award.

Iowa State is back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 21 when it takes on Eastern Michigan in Chatham, Ontario, Canada – Carleton’s hometown. The game will begin at 5 p.m.

Atlantic girls hoops opens season with new coach and team first mindset

Sports

November 19th, 2018 by admin

The Atlantic girls basketball team will begin a new season tonight with a new Head Coach. Dan Vargason takes over the reigns this season from Kelly Juhl. Vargason has been an Assistant Coach for the program for the last 5 years. Varagason takes over a team that finished 3-17 last season but does return 4 of the top 5 scorers.

Coach Vargason felt it was a good opportunity for him to step in and try to move the program forward.

Vargason is also the head cross country coach for Atlantic and said his first order of business with the basketball team was to try to instill a team first mindset like he has with the cross country program.

Another push for the team was to try to get some greater numbers in the program and they were able to convince a number of athletes to join up. Coach Vargason said he has been selling that everyone can come in and contribute in some way to the team.

Baylee Newell is the top returning scorer after leading the team with 9.4 points per game last year. McKenzie Waters (8.9ppg), Haley Rasmussen (7.0ppg), and Alyssa Ginther (5.3ppg) are some of the other top returners for the Trojans.

Their first game is tonight at home against Carroll and will follow that up immediately with a road trip to Dension-Schleswig on Tuesday night. We’ll have coverage of that Tuesday game on KJAN.
