AMES, Iowa (AP) — Injured Iowa State star Lindell Wigginton met with reporters for the first time in weeks wearing a shirt that read “Then What?” That’s a question the Cyclones will soon be asking themselves about Wigginton and Solomon Young. Both players could be back within a week, leaving Iowa State coach Steve Prohm with some decisions to make with a roster that will soon feature about a dozen Big 12-caliber players.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Philip Rivers led the Chargers to a pair of touchdowns in the final minutes, then hit Mike Williams for the go-ahead 2-point conversion with 4 seconds remaining to give Los Angeles a 29-28 victory over the Chiefs. The Chargers clinched a playoff berth while forging a first-place tie with Kansas City in the AFC West. The Chargers also ended a nine-game losing streak to their longtime division rivals.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs collapsed in the fourth quarter against the Chargers, giving up two touchdown drives in the final minutes of a 29-28 defeat. That not only cost Kansas City an opportunity to clinch the AFC West title, it also made the team’s final two games against Seattle and Oakland much more important.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas is finally getting another shot at Villanova, though with far less on the line this time. The Wildcats ended the Jayhawks’ season in the Final Four in April before routing Michigan to win their second national championship in three years. Both teams have much different rosters this season, and the game Saturday will be played at Allen Fieldhouse rather than the Alamodome in San Antonio.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Reigning Most Outstanding Player Mikaela Foecke ripped her 19th kill to cap defending champion Nebraska’s rally for a 22-15, 25-16, 25-23, 25-20, 15-11 victory over Illinois in the NCAA volleyball semifinals. The Cornhuskers (29-6) will go for their sixth title Saturday night against Stanford (33-1), which swept BYU in the other semifinal.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Fans of the former Negro League could have a chance to commemorate some of its stars through a series of bobbleheads. The effort is designed to help mark the upcoming centennial of baseball’s Negro National League, which began in Kansas City in February of 1920. Organizers of the effort, which was unveiled Wednesday, have created a team of 30 Negro League stars who would be honored with bobbleheads if the campaign raises enough money.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Things just got a little more interesting in the AFC West after Philip Rivers engineered a very late comeback. The Los Angeles Chargers scored two touchdowns in the final 3:49 before Rivers hit Mike Williams for a two-point conversion with just four seconds left to lead a 29-28 win over the Chiefs in Kansas City.

The Chiefs led 28-14 and were looking at their 10th straight win over the Chargers until Justin Jackson scored on a three-yard run. Following a Kansas City punt, Rivers kept the winning drive alive with a fourth-down pass to Travis Benjamin, and Los Angeles received some help from a questionable pass interference call that gave the Chargers first-and-goal at the Kansas City 1 with eight seconds remaining.

Rivers was 26 of 38 for 313 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions as the Chargers moved into a virtual tie with Kansas City for the division lead at 11-3. Williams accounted for 20 points with three touchdowns and the game-winning conversion catch that allowed Los Angeles to clinch a playoff berth.

Patrick Mahomes threw for a pair of first-quarter touchdowns and was 24 of 34 for 243 yards and no picks.

The IGHSAU released their weekly girls basketball rankings on Thursday. Ranked teams from the KJAN listening area include CAM at #9 in Class 1A. Glidden-Ralston checks in at #13 in 1A as well. Treynor is ranked #2 in Class 2A and Panorma is 6th. Red Oak comes in at #7 this week in 3A with Shenandoah dropping two spots to #13. Lewis Central jumped two spots to #8 in Class 4A.

Jess Schaben

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior Jess Schaben was named an Honorable Mention All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for the third time in her career, the AVCA announced Wednesday morning.

Schaben wraps up her Iowa State career with another award to her stuffed mantle of prizes. She finishes her Cyclone tenure as a three-time AVCA Honorable Mention All-American to go with her three AVCA All-Midwest Region team nods. The AVCA also recognized Schaben as the Midwest Region Freshman of the Year back in 2015. She was also a three-time All-Big 12 First Team honoree.

The Defiance, Iowa native finished up her senior season leading the Cyclones to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) title last night, earning Tournament MVP honors in the process. For the season, Schaben finished 2018 with 516 kills at 4.20 per set, both the No. 4 marks for a single season in ISU history, at .250 hitting. She also posted 362 digs at 2.94 per set, racking up 20 double-doubles across the season.

For her career, Schaben finishes fourth in Iowa State history with her 1,548 career kills, second with her 3.57 kills per set. Last night in the sweep of Tulane, Schaben became the 16th player in ISU history to record over 1,000 digs, finishing with 1,005 for her career. She is the third player in Cyclone history to finish their careers with at least 1,500 kills and 1,000 digs, joining Krisitin Hugdahl (1992-95) and Steph McCannon (1992-95).

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Commissioner Roger Goodell says the NFL won’t pay for video evidence in cases involving domestic violence and defended the league’s handling of those investigations. Goodell said the NFL’s approach to dealing with domestic violence is “extraordinary.” The league came under scrutiny again when surveillance video showed former Kansas City running back Kareem Hunt shoving and kicking a woman in a Cleveland hotel in February. Hunt wasn’t disciplined before the video was released by TMZ.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs can clinch their third straight AFC West title and a first-round playoff bye with a victory over the Chargers on Thursday night. Meanwhile, Los Angeles can forge a tie in the division and clinch its first postseason berth since 2013 with a win at Arrowhead Stadium. The matchup features the two teams with the AFC’s best records.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Cornhuskers are a hungry and humble basketball team. Hungry because they just missed out on making the NCAA Tournament last season despite winning 22 games, setting a school record with 13 conference wins and finishing fourth in the Big Ten. Humble because for all the success they’ve had getting out to an 8-2 start, they still have a couple disappointing losses to remind them they aren’t good enough to win most nights unless they bring their best effort.

UNDATED (AP) — It will be a classic mentor-mentee matchup when defending national champion Nebraska and Illinois meet in the NCAA volleyball semifinals in Minneapolis on Thursday night. John Cook has coached the Cornhuskers to their fourth straight final four. Chris Tamas has led the Illini to the semifinals in his second year after serving as an assistant to Cook. Top-seeded Stanford plays BYU in the other semifinal. The winners will play for the championship on Saturday night.

Jalen signing his letter of intent with parents Chuck and Wendy and sister Maria Petersen, NIACC Head Coach Curtis Vais, and Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason.

Atlantic senior Jalen Petersen officially signed on Wednesday to continue his cross country and track career at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City. Petersen was joined by his family and coaches for the ceremony at the Atlantic High School.

Jalen is coming off back to back individual trips to the State Cross Country Meet and also helped his team reach the meet this season as well. Petersen finished 67th in both trips to the Class 3A state meet. He has been a solid performer for the Trojans since his freshman year. Jalen talked about why he chose NIACC.

Petersen will be a two season runner at NIACC in both cross country and track. NIACC head coach Curtis Vais said Jalen fits into their program very well.

Atlantic Head Cross Country Coach Dan Vargason said Jalen deserves this opportunity because of the work that he has put in.

Petersen is currently in the midst of a strong season with the Trojan basketball team and will participate in track next spring before focusing on heading to Mason City.
