State Archery Tournament draws nearly 1,900 student-competitors this weekend

(Radio Iowa) — The boys’ state basketball tournament isn’t the only state tournament that will hold its championship rounds in Des Moines this weekend. Some 19-hundred Iowa students from grades four through 12 will compete in the Iowa State Archery Tournament. Donise Petersen, the archery coordinator for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says the sport is seeing healthy growth. “We have 300 schools that are actually shooting archery during the school day with physical education, most of those classes are going on,” Petersen says, “and then we have about 100 schools that are shooting actively within the competition program.”

The tournament features a full field of 88 teams shooting for nearly 17-thousand dollars in scholarships and other prizes, as well as a chance to go to the national competition this spring. Peterson says the local-level competitions got underway a few months ago. “Throughout the state of Iowa, schools started competing the first weekend in December all the way through the end of February,” Petersen says. “They have face-to-face archery tournaments and those schools that are the highest-scoring schools within their divisions — we have elementary, middle school and high school divisions — get to attend the state tournament.”

During this weekend’s state tournament, there’s a two-day bullseye competition in addition to a one-day 3-D competition using animal silhouettes. “The targets range between ten and 15 meters,” Petersen says. “There are targets such as a turkey, a deer, a bear, an antelope, a ram and a coyote. They’ll shoot those targets and depending on where their arrow hits within the target is the score that they receive.”

Unlike many other sports, Petersen says archery levels the playing field, “allowing students of all sizes and abilities to participate and excel.” The state archery tournament will be held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds both Saturday and Sunday.

The Atlantic High School team qualified both a bullseye and 3D team. The Atlantic Middle School team qualified for Bullseye.

No. 21 Wisconsin routs Iowa 65-45

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said he had a feeling Ethan Happ would have a good game against Iowa.

He was right.

Happ did a little bit of everything to help No. 21 Wisconsin beat Iowa 65-45, scoring 21 points in his final home game and grabbing 14 rebounds. He also had three assists, two blocks and two steals, all the while helping keep Iowa’s post players in foul trouble for much of the game.

Fellow senior Khalil Iverson had the first double-double of his career with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

As much as things went well for Happ, Iverson and Wisconsin (21-9, 13-6 Big Ten), it was another disappointing performance for the Hawkeyes, who have now lost four of five. That includes three straight losses by double digits, the last two with coach Fran McCaffery missing from the bench as he finished a suspension for going after a referee following a 90-70 loss to Ohio State Feb. 26.

They shot 31 percent from the field for the game, their worst performance of the season, and their previous scoring low was 65 in a one-point loss to Maryland Feb. 19.

Meanwhile, their post players couldn’t stay on the floor. Luka Garza went to the bench in the first half after being whistled for his second foul with nearly 9 minutes left. Nicholas Baer followed a few minutes later.
Then it was Jared Cook’s turn in the second half. He was whistled for his third foul less than 4 minutes into the half, came back five minutes later and was promptly hit with his fourth.

After scoring 19 and grabbing 15 rebounds in the two teams’ first meeting Nov. 30, Cook was scoreless while registering seven rebounds.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin turned Iowa’s 25 fouls into 27 free throw attempts, though the Badgers made just 17. Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes were just 4 of 6 from the line.

Jordan Bohannon, who averages nearly 13 points a game, and Ryan Kriener led Iowa with eight apiece.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Ethan Happ had 21 points and 14 rebounds in his final home game to help No. 21 Wisconsin beat Iowa 65-45. Fellow senior Khalil Iverson added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — First-year Drake coach Darian DeVries has been named the Missouri Valley Conference men’s basketball coach of the year. The league says that DeVries beat out Dana Ford of Missouri State and Porter Moser of Loyola (Chicago) for the honor. DeVries led Drake to a share of just their second league title since 1971 in the regular season despite being picked to finish ninth.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska backup guard Nana Akenten (NA-nuh uh-KEN-ten) has been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. Akenten has appeared in 28 games and averaged 4.3 points and 2.5 rebounds. The Cornhuskers have at least two games left. They finish the regular season Sunday against Iowa and play next week in the Big Ten Tournament.

UNDATED (AP) — College basketball players around the nation are playing their final home games this week. Senior nights are designed to honor players for four years of contributions. But the biggest stars are underclassmen leaving early for the NBA. Some coaches are finding ways to give recognition to those younger players who won’t be back in uniform.

UNDATED (AP) — With Kansas out of the picture for the first time in 15 years, the Big 12 title race will come down to K-State and Texas Tech. If the Wildcats and Red Raiders both win on Saturday, they’ll share the crown. The same holds true if they lose, since the Jayhawks are guaranteed to finish at least one loss behind them.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 7 Michigan and No. 9 Michigan State meet in East Lansing on Saturday with the winner earning at least a share of the Big Ten regular-season championship. Defending champion Michigan State handed the Wolverines their only home loss of the season with a 77-70 win on Feb. 24. Both teams could be without key players because of injuries. Back-to-back home wins over ranked opponents put Indiana on the NCAA Tournament bubble.

Haley scores 28, West Virginia upsets Iowa State 90-75

Sports

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia coach Bob Huggins believed his team is now the best version of themselves. His team proved it as Jermaine Haley scored a career-high 28 points and the Mountaineers upset Iowa State 90-75 on Wednesday night. “We’re not talking about the same team,” Huggins said. “This is not the same team. We’ve had so many different teams … obviously (this is the best team we’ve had this year).” Derek Culver picked up his eighth double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Lamont West added his second career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Jordan McCabe added 18 points. Haley and McCabe powered West Virginia (12-18, 4-13 Big 12) in the first half with eight 3-pointers.

The loss will hamper the Cyclones’ NCAA seeding stock. West Virginia held a NET ranking of 114 going into Wednesday, giving Iowa State a Quadrant 2 loss, their fourth of the season. ISU is slated to be in the 5-7 seed range. There is still time to improve Iowa State’s seeding with a home game remaining against Texas Tech, and the possibility of a strong run in the Big 12 Tournament.

Iowa State hosts No. 8 Texas Tech on Saturday in the regular-season finale.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Jordan Geist scored 18 points and Torrence Watson had 17 to lead Missouri to a 64-39 win over Georgia in a matchup of two of the SEC’s bottom three teams. Watson made each of his five 3-pointers in the second half.

UNDATED (AP) — With Kansas out of the picture for the first time in 15 years, the Big 12 title race will come down to K-State and Texas Tech. UNDATED (AP) — Devonte Graham called up his former teammates at Kansas a couple weeks ago and offered some encouraging words, along with reminding them about “the streak.” He helped keep it going for four of the 14 years that the Jayhawks dominated the Big 12. Now, one year after his departure, one of the most remarkable runs of success in major college hoops is over. Texas Tech and Kansas State are poised to win the Big 12 title.

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Royals catcher Salvador Perez underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow, a procedure that will sideline the six-time All-Star for the upcoming season. The surgery was performed in Los Angeles by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the Dodgers’ team physician. The recovery time is usually about a year, meaning Perez could be back for opening day next season.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina took another step in his comeback from left knee surgery in December by catching opening-day starter Miles Mikolas in a camp game. Molina, a nine-time All-Star, took part in game played at the team’s complex in Jupiter, Florida.
