MLB umpire Eric Cooper (IA Native & ISU grad) dies at 52; did playoffs 2 weeks ago

Sports

October 21st, 2019 by Ric Hanson

Eric Cooper, the Major League Baseball umpire who worked the AL Division Series two weeks ago, has died. He was 52. Commissioner Rob Manfred announced Cooper’s death Sunday.
Cooper died after having a blood clot. He had knee surgery earlier in the week and was recuperating at his father’s home in Iowa. Popular with his fellow umps, he was talking to them Saturday about his recovery. Cooper made his debut in the majors in 1996 as a minor league fill-in and joined the big league staff in 1999.

His most recent assignment came in the playoffs this month when he worked the New York Yankees’ sweep of Minnesota in the ALDS. He was at second base on Oct. 7 for the clinching Game 3 at Target Field. Cooper worked the 2014 World Series between the Kansas City Royals and San Francisco Giants. He drew that post helped by his success rate on replay challenges — MLB took those numbers into account in picking the crew, and Cooper had only three calls reversed all season.

Cooper umpired in 10 division series, four League Championship Series and the 2005 All-Star Game, along with two World Baseball Classics. He also was behind the plate for three no-hitters — two by Mark Buehrle, including a perfect game, and another by Hideo Nomo. Cooper worked the plate in the final game in the career of Cal Ripken Jr. “This is a very sad day across Major League Baseball,” Manfred said in a statement. “Eric Cooper was a highly respected umpire, a hard worker on the field and a popular member of our staff. He also served as a key voice of the MLB Umpires Association on important issues in our game.”

In a statement, players’ union chief Tony Clark said: “Eric Cooper’s friendly and familiar presence in the baseball community will be missed by all of us. He was a professional and gentleman whose passion for our game, the players and his fellow umpires was evident in the way he went about his work and life.” Cooper was an Iowa native and Iowa State graduate. He was known for rooting for another school — Notre Dame, and frequently wore Fighting Irish gear in the umpires’ locker rooms while talking about the football team’s success.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — In case you missed it in Week 7 of the NFL season: It was a fitting form of protest, given the circus that NFL officiating has become, game after game, week after week: A trio of spectators wore clown makeup and black-and-white striped jerseys in the stands at the Detroit Lions’ home loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Folks in the crowd booed during the pregame coin toss. And some more when the first yellow flag flew.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Denny Hamlin has won the chaotic NASCAR Cup Series elimination race at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, holding off Chase Elliott on a second overtime restart to pick up some extra playoff points. Elliott managed to finish second and advanced to the round of eight on points when Brad Keselowski, whom he’d been dueling with all afternoon, got boxed in on the restart and lost too many spots.

Big plays lead Northern Iowa past South Dakota 42-27

Sports

October 20th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Will McElvain threw three touchdown passes to Isaiah Weston, Tyler Hoosman scored two touchdowns, and Northern Iowa defeated South Dakota 42-27 on Saturday. Austin Evans returned an interception 16 yards for the Panthers’ other touchdown. Northern Iowa, No. 15 in the FCS Coaches Poll, had 417 yards total offense but only 11 first downs. The Panthers were 5 of 13 converting on third down.

No. 23 Iowa holds off Purdue 26-20

Sports

October 19th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Mekhi Sargent ran for a 14-yard score with 2:16 left and 23rd-ranked Iowa held off Purdue 26-20 on Saturday, snapping a two-game losing streak. Tyler Goodson scored his first career touchdown from a yard out and Keith Duncan kicked four field goals for the Hawkeyes (5-2, 2-2 Big Ten), who also broke a two-game skid against the Boilermakers (2-5, 1-3).

Purdue made the Hawkeyes earn this one, though. The Boilermakers cut it to 19-13 on J.D. Dellinger’s 36-yard field goal with 2:59 left. But Purdue was assessed a personal foul after squibbing the ensuing kickoff to midfield, and runs of 21 and 14 yards by Sargent gave the Hawkeyes the cushion they’d been looking for all day. Jack Plummer’s 1-yard TD pass to Payne Durham with 24 seconds left made it 26-20. But Iowa secured the onside kick.

David Bell caught 13 passes for 197 yards and a touchdown for Purdue, which ran for just 33 yards. Duncan hit field goals of 30, 44, 42 and 38 yards on a wet afternoon in Iowa City. He’s now 17 of 19 on the season.
THE TAKEAWAY
Iowa: The Hawkeyes’ defense is one of the best in school history. Iowa’s offense is another story. The Hawkeyes’ attack is alarmingly inconsistent, and it’s keeping Iowa from reaching its full potential. It could get even worse, as receiver Brandon Smith was carried off by his teammates in the fourth quarter with what appeared to be a right leg injury. Smith headed to the locker room on crutches after catching nine balls for 106 yards.
Purdue: The Boilermakers might have pulled off the upset if not for two first-half turnovers deep in Iowa territory. Purdue likely won’t make a bowl in 2019, but the prospect of star Rondale Moore and Bell playing together should frighten Big Ten West defensive coordinators. Plummer wasn’t bad either, finishing 30 of 50 for 327 yards.
POLL IMPLICATIONS
Iowa might struggle to maintain its place in Sunday’s Top 25.
UP NEXT
Iowa visits Northwestern on Oct. 26. The Wildcats were drubbed by No. 4 Ohio State 52-3 on Friday.

Purdy, Iowa State keep rolling in 34-24 win over Texas Tech

Sports

October 19th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Brock Purdy threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns, freshman Breece Hall ran 75 yards for the first of his two scores and Iowa State took a big lead early in a 34-24 victory against Texas Tech on Saturday. Purdy had 277 yards and all three of his scoring tosses for a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter, with two TDs to tight end Charlie Kolar, as the Cyclones (5-2, 3-1 Big 12) won their third straight game since losing at Baylor in their only other scheduled trip to Texas.

The Red Raiders (3-4, 1-3) extended their longest losing streak in the series with Iowa State to four, dropping their second in a row this season since beating Oklahoma State for the best victory so far under first-year coach Matt Wells.
THE TAKEAWAY
Iowa State: The game played out in an eerily similar way to the Cyclones’ loss at Baylor. But the teams were reversed. This time Iowa State went up 20-0 instead of falling behind by the same score, then let Texas Tech back in the game the same way Baylor gave the Cyclones a chance three weeks ago. But Tech never got closer than 10.
UP NEXT
Iowa State: Oklahoma State at home next Saturday.
