Native Iowan part of Superbowl flyover

News, Sports

January 31st, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — A Sac City-native and U-S Marine Corps Major, Adam Wellington, will be behind the controls of one of the jets in the military flyover at the Super Bowl in Miami on Sunday. The 37-year-old pilot graduated from Sac Community Schools in 2001 and joined the Marines after graduating from the University of Iowa in 2005. Wellington says he was lucky to be chosen to be one of four pilots be involved in the flyover.

Major Adam Wellington

“Basically these things get source to higher headquarters…and they trickle down. Eventually the squadron that I’m in — which is VMF-AT-501 out of Beaufort, South Carolina — that squadron got tasked by the Marine Corps to support with an aircraft,” Wellington says, “and I just happened to be lucky enough to be the guy that the squadron chose to go down and fly.”

Wellington started flying the F-35-B in 2015. Prior to that, he flew the F-18 Hornet, including deployments to the Middle East in 2012 and 2014 and two, three-year deployments stationed in Japan. Wellington’s mother Annette Wellington of Sac City, says her son has dreamed of becoming a pilot since elementary school, and everybody in the Wellington family is thrilled to see him fly on national television.

Annette says the toughest part is her late husband and Adam’s father, Don, won’t be with them to watch the flyover. “I lost my husband in 2018. And he would have been so proud to watch him on T-V flying that jet. That’s one of the sad things — buy you know he’s watching him from heaven,” she says. Sunday’s flyover will occur prior to kickoff. Wellington and the other pilots will then land at a nearby airfield and head back to Hard Rock Stadium to hopefully catch the halftime show and second half of the game.

He says being a part of the spectacle of the Super Bowl just adds the great career he has. “It’s always been a lifelong dream of mine to fly. The Marine Corps gave ma an opportunity and it worked out and it’s been great ever since,” Wellington says. Wellington currently lives in South Carolina with his wife, Leslie, and their three children, six-year-old Evan, four-year-old Adeline and two-year-old Vincent.

Pregame coverage begins at 1 p-m. Sunday, February 2nd on Fox with kickoff scheduled for 5:30 p-m Central Time. (Listen for the game Sunday evening on KJAN!)

No. 19 Illinois faces No. 18 Iowa in Big Ten comeback story

Sports

January 31st, 2020 by Ric Hanson

COLUMBUS, OH (AP) – No. 19 Illinois and No. 18 Iowa meet on Sunday in a key Big Ten men’s game. Illinois (15-5, 7-2) is tied for first place with No. 14 Michigan State in a league that has shown some parity in the first month of conference play. Still the Illini are the surprise team so far, reeling off seven straight wins. They won at Michigan last Saturday and at home against Minnesota on Thursday night. It will be the first meeting of the season for Iowa and Illinois. They’ll meet again in the regular-season finale on March 8. Listen for the game beginning at 11-a.m. Sunday, on KJAN.

The Hawkeye women (18-3, 9-1) lead the Big Ten, average 80 points and extended their winning streak to nine on Thursday. They’ll travel to Michigan on Sunday. Tip-off for that game is set for 11-a.m.

Andy Reid won’t silence critics until he wins a Super Bowl

Sports

January 31st, 2020 by Ric Hanson

MIAMI (AP) – Andy Reid has won more games than any coach without a Super Bowl title. So people question whether he can win the big one. The knock against Reid throughout his 21-year coaching career has been his inability to win a championship. He was 1-4 in conference title games during 14 seasons in Philadelphia and the Eagles lost to the Patriots in the Super Bowl after the 2004 season. Reid lost another conference title game at home last year with Kansas City. But the Chiefs returned to the AFC championship this season and advanced to face the 49ers on Sunday.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) – Anthony Cowan Jr. scored a career-high 31 points, Jalen Smith had 18 points and 14 rebounds, and No. 15 Maryland beat 18th-ranked Iowa 82-72 Thursday night to snap the Hawkeyes’ five-game winning streak. Maryland won its fourth straight and improved to 12-0 at home. Luka Garza scored 21 for the Hawkeyes and Joe Wieskamp had 17. Garza, the Big Ten’s leading scorer, was in foul trouble throughout.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (AP) – Kathleen Doyle had 23 points and eight assists and No. 18 Iowa beat Penn State 77-66 to extend its win streak to nine games. McKenna Warnock scored 16 points, Alexis Sevillian added 15 and Makenzie Meyer 14 for Iowa. Kamaria McDaniel led Penn State with 19 points and Makenna Marisa scored 10.

MIAMI (AP) — Few Super Bowls in recent memory have appeared as competitive as 49ers-Chiefs. No wonder there’s a little more buzz about this one. History and excitement are a nice combination for any championship game. The history stems from the Chiefs seeking their first title since 1970 when they won the fourth Super Bowl in the final matchup of AFL-NFL. The full merger took place the next season _ and Kansas City hasn’t been back to the Super Bowl for which its founder, Lamar Hunt, provided the name. And the 49ers are seeking a record-tying sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy.

MIAMI (AP) — There are countless numbers that tell the story of how the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs made it to the Super Bowl. The Chiefs throw the ball at a rate rarely reached in NFL history. The Niners are running more frequently this postseason than any team since 1973. Kansas City thrives on deep passes, while San Francisco is the best at limiting them.

MIAMI (AP) — Patrick Mahomes learned his lessons at a young age and in a perfect place. He hung around major league locker rooms with his father, a journeyman pitcher, and saw what made the greats of the game so great. Columnist Tim Dahlberg writes the young Mahomes hung around superstars like Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter. He watched how they prepared and saw how they dealt with both success and failure. With the Chiefs in the Super Bowl for the first time in a half century, the quarterback is poised to become the face of the NFL for a long time to come.

MIAMI (AP) — Even the oddsmakers aren’t sure about this Super Bowl. That’s how close the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers match up. The Chiefs are a 1-point favorite. That basically means a tossup. By kickoff on Sunday the 49ers could be the bettors’ choice. There could be almost as much action on prop bets _ does Kyle Shanahan remember to run the ball if the Niners get ahead 28-3 in the second half, for example? Or a lot more bets on the over/under. That stands at 54 1-2 and seems a bit low.
