February 22nd, 2020 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Monika Czinano scored 23 points, Kathleen Doyle added 18 with seven assists and five rebounds and No. 19 Iowa rolled to a 100-57 win over Penn State. The Hawkeyes enter the final weekend of the regular season a game behind No. 7 Maryland and No. 18 Northwestern.

Iowa, which reached 100 points for the fourth time this season and surpassed 90 for the third consecutive game, took care of the Nittany Lions, who have lost 12 straight, quickly, en route to its 35th straight win at home. Kamaria McDaniel scored 22 points for Penn State.

Jack Flaherty named Cardinals opening day starter

February 22nd, 2020 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Jack Flaherty is getting the ball on opening day for the St. Louis Cardinals. St. Louis manager Mike Shildt says the 24-year-old Flaherty will start the season opener March 26 at Cincinnati. It will be the right-hander’s first opening day start and comes after he finished fourth in NL Cy Young Award voting with a closing surge last season. Flaherty pitched the home opener for the Cardinals last year. Shildt gave Flaherty the news on Friday, not a surprise after Flaherty went 11-8 with a 2.75 ERA last season. Seven of those wins came after the All-Star break, when he posted a 0.91 ERA.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals slugger Paul Goldschmidt never found consistency with his swing last season. Poor swings that yield ugly results early in spring training games may actually prevent that from happening again this season. The 32-year-old is ready to take his cuts as the games get underway this weekend, but he is not yet ready for the field. Arm soreness has limited Goldschmidt’s throwing, and manager Mike Shildt will use him as the designated hitter Saturday and in his next scheduled appearance on Monday.

UNDATED (AP) — Top-ranked Baylor heads into Saturday’s showdown with No. 3 Kansas carrying a league-record 23-game winning streak. That streak includes its first road victory in 18 tries against the Jayhawks. The Bears could deal a staggering blow to the Jayhawks’ hopes of winning the Big 12 championship by completing the series sweep. A win at home also might solidify their spot as the overall No. 1 seed in next month’s NCAA Tournament.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 7 Maryland visits No. 25 Ohio State on Sunday. The Big Ten-leading Terrapins look to win their 10th in a row and complete a two-game sweep against the Buckeyes, after beating them 67-55 at home last month behind Anthony Cowan Jr.’s 20 points. Ohio State shot just 31% in that one, 5 for 27 on 3-pointers. With a two-game lead over No. 9 Penn State, Maryland also hopes to create more space in the conference standings.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Alexa Willard scored 14 points, Abby Hipp added 11 points and 12 rebounds, and No. 23 Missouri State beat Evansville 76-62. Brice Calip had 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Bears, who trailed for the only time when the Aces scored the opening basket on Lola Bracy’s 3-pointer. Abby Feit led the Aces with 17 points and made 4 of 5 from 3-point range.

Spartans rain in outside shots to take down Stanton

Sports

February 21st, 2020 by admin

The Exira-EHK Spartans hit 11 threes en route to a 60-50 win over the Stanton Viqueens in a Class 1A Region 7 Semfinal on Friday night.

Stanton started the game well with some great transition buckets and jumped on top 8-3. The Spartans regrouped after a timeout and grabbed the lead by the end of the quarter 18-17 on a Macy Emgarten three. Exira-EHK Head Coach Tom Petersen thought the players that came off the bench provided a great spark.

The Spartans then dropped in 3 more threes in the second quarter and led 35-28 by halftime. Three more triples in the third for Sparty pushed the lead to 13 after 3 quarters and Stanton would only get as close as 9 the rest of the way. Coach Petersen thought they would have a chance for some good outside looks if they worked inside out.

Macy Emgarten dropped in 19 points to lead the Spartans, including 3 threes. Tatum Grubbs added 10 and Kamryn Waymire had 8. The only sore spot for the Spartans was a 7 of 22 effort at the foul line. Emgarten said the Spartans worked on handling the Stanton press and executed well.

Exira-EHK advances to the Class 1A Region 7 Final next Wednesday night against St. Albert in Harlan at 8:00 p.m. The Saintes advanced with a 60-55 win over Central Decatur. We’ll have coverage of that game on KJAN.

Stanton got 11 points each from Kami Tibben and Abby Burke. The Viqueens end their season with a record of 21-3.
