Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Angels slugger Albert Pujols had two hits and exchanged jerseys with former teammate Yadier Molina to conclude an emotional return to St. Louis, and Los Angeles beat the Cardinals 6-4. Pujols was cheered throughout his first series in St. Louis since leaving the club in free agency after the 2011 season. The former Cardinal got standing ovations before each plate appearance throughout the weekend and a curtain call after popping out in his final at-bat.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hunter Dozier hit a three-run shot, Homer Bailey was stingy again while pitching into the sixth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Twins 6-1 on a soggy, overcast day. Bailey earned the win as the Royals forged a split of the four-game series. Michael Pineda took the loss after allowing five runs in the third inning.

UNDATED (AP) — After six straight victories, the Los Angeles Dodgers now lead the NL West by 13 games. The Dodgers have won six straight division championships, and although last year’s required a one-game playoff, they’re threatening to run away with this year’s title. The Dodgers own the best record in baseball and are in the middle of another midseason surge.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Michigan’s Erik Bakich says Vanderbilt’s Tim Corbin has been the biggest influence on him as he’s gone through his coaching career. Bakich was a Vandy assistant for seven years until 2009. Corbin says he’s proud of what Bakich has accomplished. Now he wants to beat his protege when Michigan and Vanderbilt meet in the best-of-three College World Series finals.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Felipe Gutierrez scored early in the second half and Tim Melia made four saves to give Sporting Kansas City its first road win of the season, 1-0 over the Columbus Crew. Gutierrez was just a couple steps off the goal line unmarked for the easy header on a short cross from Gerso Fernandes.
