Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs’ perfect start ended Sunday against Pittsburgh. Now, they must heal up in short order before facing Oakland on Thursday night. It is a particularly grueling turnaround considering the physical nature of the Chiefs’ game against the Steelers, one that left them with even more players on the injury list.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State is giving up the fewest points and the fewest yards in Big 12 play so far. After facing Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, Iowa State has given up an average of just 16 points and 310.3 yards per game. Texas is a distant second at 389.3 yards a game. The Cyclones will face another challenge this Saturday against high-scoring Texas Tech.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa nearly made the NCAA Tournament last season despite playing without a true center. The Hawkeyes figure to have a pair of freshman big men capable of providing a presence in the post. Luka Garza and Jack Nunge, both 6-foot-11, will likely see plenty of playing time this winter as the Hawkeyes look to rebuild following the loss of Peter Jok, the Big Ten’s leading scorer in 2016-17.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State needs only to look to last season for inspiration in turning around a season. The Wildcats were 3-3 but finished with six wins in their final seven games, including a win in the Texas Bowl. They are 3-3 again with No. 9 Oklahoma coming to town. They hope a similar strong finish can get them to another bowl game.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Mark Andrews is much more than a red zone target for Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield. The 6-foot-5 junior often has broken defenses down the field. The big tight end scored from 59 yards out in the fourth quarter to beat Texas 29-24. He has 23 catches and 459 yards heading into Saturday’s game at Kansas State.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Wichita State is ready for a tougher conference in the American Athletic. But coaches say Cincinnati is actually the team to beat in the league, slightly ahead of the Shockers in preseason picks. Wichita State switched conferences from the Missouri Valley.

UNDATED (AP) — An AP survey finds that more than two dozen universities and conferences with major basketball programs responded to news of the sport’s bribery scandal by conducting internal reviews of their compliance operations. The arrests and details of a federal probe have triggered uncomfortable soul-searching across the sport.

UNDATED (AP) — Washington State coach Mike Leach says he was as surprised as anyone when he learned athletic director Bill Moos had taken a new job at Nebraska. But Leach says he has no plans to follow Moos, noting Nebraska already has Mike Riley to lead the football program. Moos hired Leach before the 2012 season to turn the Cougars program around.
