A mechanical engineer from central Iowa has invented a system to help golfers improve their swing and he’s turning to crowdsourcing to get the idea off the tee and onto the green. Nick Mahowald, of Des Moines, is C-E-O and founder of SwingLync, which he created after helping a friend in Wisconsin learn how to play golf over the phone. “SwingLync is a wearable training technology for the average golfer,” Mahowald says. “The way it works is, you wear three small sensors which connect to your smartphone, you take a swing and the system will analyze the swing.”

Those sensors are worn on the wrist, waist and back to measure things like shoulder and hip rotation as well as spine and pelvic angles. After weeks, months and even years of practice, a smooth golf swing can be extremely difficult to master.
