Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith began his offseason lamenting a loss to Pittsburgh in the playoffs. Then he watched Kansas City drafted his heir apparent in the 1st round and cut one of his favorite options. To say it’s been a difficult few months would be an understatement, but Smith remains optimistic about the upcoming season.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon hit solo home runs and the Kansas City Royals picked up their fifth consecutive victory, defeating the Los Angeles Angels 7-2 Thursday night. The streaking Royals have been getting it done with power, clubbing 14 homers in this unbeaten stretch.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Keon Broxton and Eric Thames homered to lift the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday night. Broxton drilled the first pitch he saw 489 feet into the left field seats to tie the game 2-2 in the second. It is the longest home run in Busch Stadium three’s history and the second-longest this season in the major leagues.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Sam Hornish Junior will drive three Xfinity Series races for Team Penske this summer. Hornish will drive the Number 22 Discount Tire Ford Mustang at Iowa Speedway on June 24th and July 29th. He will also race Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on August 12th. His most recent Xfinity Series win came in 2016 while driving for Joe Gibbs Racing at Iowa.
