AMES, Iowa (AP) — A business group is scrapping plans to borrow $175,000 from Iowa State University to pay for its share of a new terminal at the Ames airport. Ames Economic Development Commission president Dan Culhane says securing a bank loan instead of university funds makes more sense given “the recent scrutiny of the Ames airport.” Iowa State’s role in financing renovations at the city-owned airport has faced questions amid a scandal involving President Steven Leath’s use of university planes.

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — Burlington Mayor Shane McCampbell apologized Monday for offending some city employees last month during a discussion of a 7.2 percent raise given to City Manager Jim Ferneau. Some noted the raise far exceeded the 2.5 percent raise given to other city employees, but McCampbell says Ferneau is involved in the city’s most important decisions. He contrasted that with other workers, saying, “They take a week off and maybe a few blades of grass don’t get cut.” Burlington’s firefighter union objected.

WEST UNION, Iowa (AP) — A rural Fayette man charged with murder has been found dead in the Fayette County Jail. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that jail staff found 39-year-old Matthew Braun unconscious in an inmate shower area around 9:45 p.m. Monday. He was accused of beating to death 57-year-old Kris Simpson, a fellow resident at Prairie View Residential Care Facility, in 2012.

PEOSTA, Iowa (AP) — A proposed $500 million high-voltage power line stretching through multiple counties in Iowa and Wisconsin drew few people to a public hearing. The Telegraph Herald reports that six people attended the first two hours of a three-hour open house by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service. The agency is gathering feedback from the public as it begins assessing the project’s environmental impact. The proposed Cardinal-Hickory Creek Transmission Line will stretch 125 miles.
