Atlantic Police Chief Steve Green, today (Tuesday), wants citizens of the community to be aware that last week’s test of the Outdoor Warning System (Tornado sirens) resulted in the discovery that one of the sirens, located in the area of 5th and Spruce Streets, was not working. Green says repairing the siren is not possible due to the age of the siren and parts no longer being available.

A new siren has been ordered, but it’s not expected to arrive for at least eight-weeks, due to the volume of sirens typically ordered at this time of year from communities across the country.

Between now and the time the replacement siren arrives, Green says authorities want the public to be aware of the options they have with regard to staying safe in an emergency:

1. If you have computer access, navigate to the Cass County home page on the web (www.atlanticiowa.com/county). Near the bottom of the page is a link entitled ALERT IOWA. Click on the link and follow the instructions to sign-up for emergency alerts on your phone (land-line) or cell phone. You can also elect to receive text messages, depending on the option you choose.
2. For smartphone users, there is an app distributed by the Red Cross that alerts you to warnings issued by the National Weather Service for the Atlantic Zip Code. The app also has other important uses in case of a Tornado Emergency. This app is free, and you can find it by going to your App Store and searching for American Red Cross Tornado.

Finally, in the event of a true emergency, Atlantic Police will have an officer in the area with instructions to run his or her cruiser siren in conjunction with the other emergency sirens in town. The Police Department will NOT, however, be running the Police Siren for weekly drills or for the Statewide Tornado Drill, on Thursday.
