The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) reports more than three dozen Iowa water systems have been awarded Water Fluoridation Quality Awards from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among the utilities or communities receiving the award was: Atlantic Municipal Utilities; Harlan Municipal Utilities; the Bayard, Breda and Casey Water Supply services; and, the Logan and Onawa Municipal Water Plants.

Fluoridation is the adjustment of fluoride in drinking water to a level effective for preventing tooth decay. The award recognizes those communities that achieved excellence in community water fluoridation by maintaining a consistent level of fluoride in drinking water throughout 2014.

For 2014, a total of 2,282 public water systems in 33 states received the awards, including 40 in Iowa.
