AMES, Iowa (AP) — An incoming recruit for the Northern Iowa basketball team has been charged with operating under the influence. Ames police spokesman Jason Tuttle says Aarias Austin is also facing a possession of marijuana charge following an incident on May 1st. According to a police report, a clerk at a convenience store called police about a customer who reportedly smelled like marijuana. Officers located Austin’s vehicle and arrested him following a field sobriety test.

Officers say they also found a small amount of marijuana in Austin’s vehicle. Panthers coach Ben Jacobson tells the Des Moines Register that he won’t take any action until the legal process is complete. Austin’s attorney, Scott Michels, declined comment.

Austin spent the past two seasons playing for Des Moines Area Community College.
