Helicopter crashes near Macedonia – pilot walks away injured

The pilot of a crop dusting helicopter that crashed south of Macedonia Saturday afternoon walked away from the wreckage, but suffered serious injuries. The Daily NonPareil reports the man was flying the chopper while dusting a bean field south of Pioneer Trail at 340th Street, when the craft hit a non-energized power line and crashed into the bank of a cropland terrace.The accident happened at around noon, Saturday.

Fire officials told the paper the pilot – whose name authorities have not released yet – was out of the wreckage and conscious when rescue squads from Macedonia and Treynor arrived. A medical helicopter transported the pilot to CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center with serious injuries. The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office said the patient was stable when transported.

Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration are likely to investigate the crash.
