IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Longtime Iowa women’s field hockey coach Tracey Griesbaum says she was fired after a group of former players falsely claimed that she mistreated them. Griesbaum tells The Associated Press that she did nothing to warrant being relieved from her post leading one of Iowa’s most successful women’s athletic programs. She denied creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

In her first interview since her Aug. 4 firing, she says she conducted herself professionally “every single day” of her 14-year tenure. She says “there’s a lot of untruths and a lot of fabrications” being made by former players.

Iowa education professor Betsy Altmaier was a faculty representative to athletics through June 2011. She says Griesbaum’s firing was deserved. She says she’s aware of three players who felt mistreated.
