IDPH issuing safe food handling reminder

Now that farmer’s markets and roadside stands are open for business, state health officials have some reminders about proper food handling to avoid illness. Iowa Department of Public Health Medical Director Patricia Quinlisk says such venues have expanded to include a variety of new products like meat and fresh cut produce. She says that presents a challenge.

“If you are going to be getting those kinds of foods, the kinds of things that need to be refrigerated, you need to be aware of that at the farmer’s market. You wouldn’t want to buy a piece of meat, walk around the farmers market for a couple hours, put it in your car and then drive home for another hour,” Quinlisk says. Taking a cooler with ice to the farmer’s market is good idea, according to Quinlisk.

Once you’re home, she advises putting the items in the refrigerator right away and try to use them in a day or two or freeze them. She says washing your hands thoroughly is also a great start in preventing food borne illness.
