FRIDAY, JULY 3

Exira's 4th of July Celebration begins with a run/walk at 8 am, from 4:30-7:30 a community BBQ in the City Park, kiddie parade at 6:30, and Main Street dance at 9 pm. Blues Amusements on the Midway on Friday and Saturday.

Avoca's Independence Day Celebration July 3rd will have a live dance at 8:30 in downtown Avoca.

The Atlantic City of Clerk's Office will be closed on Friday, July 3rd in observance of the 4th of July holiday.

The KJAN office will be closed at noon July 3rd in observance of Independence Day.

 

SATURDAY, JULY 4

Atlantic Jaycees Flight Breakfast, 7am-11am @ the Atlantic Municipal Airport. $5 breakfast featuring the "Pancake Man." Free to fly-in's. Airplane rides start at 10am. For more info., call Brad Peerbolte at 712-326-9748.

Atlantic Jaycees Fireworks, 9:15pm-9:45pm @ the Atlantic Municipal Airport.

Independence Day Celebration in Oakland. Some of the activities include: a fireman's breakfast at the fire house from 7-11 am, flea market, softball tournament, car show, food stands, games and inflatables at the park, parade, BBQ at 6 pm, bingo and fireworks.

Exira's 4th of July celebration continues at 9 am with foot races in front of the elementary school, at 10:30 the annual parade, entertainment at the Gazebo at 2, kid's tractor pull at 3:30, and fireworks at 9:45. Last day for Blues Amusement on the Midway.

Avoca's Independence Day Celebration continues on Saturday July 4th with a 5k run/walk starting at 8 am at the AHST high school. There is a 6 on 6 sand volleyball tournament at 10, food stands, bed races at noon and a parade at 2. In the City Park there will be kids games, rotary chair auction, ice cream social, youth music jam, free watermelon feed, reading of the Declaration of Independence, and Fireworks at 9:30.

Atlantic Courthouse will be closed in observance to Independence Day.

Atlantic's Yard Waste site will be closed today. It will re-open tomorrow (Sunday).

Clover Run at Fontanelle's 4th of July Celebration. The Adair County 4-H Youth Council will be hosting a 5K run, 2 mile run and 2 mile walk starting at 8 am sharp. On site registration can be completed in front of First National Bank between 7 and 7:30 am. Male and female winners in each division will receive medals along with home-made apple pies. There is also a 1/4 mile race for kids 10 and under.

 

MONDAY, JULY 6

The Audubon Public Library will have North Central Dog Search & Rescue, how dogs find missing children at the library at 1:30 pm.

Brayton/Exira Churches Vacation Bible School from July 6th-9th will be held at Exira Lutheran Church. 1st-6th grade from 10-2:30 and should bring a sack lunch, preschool is from 10-noon. Cost is $10 per child or $15 per family. There will be crafts, games and music. There will be a special closing program Thursday, July 9th at 7 pm. To welcome the Bible school staff there will be a ice cream social in the Exira Park July 5th at 6:30 pm.

Registration is due on July 6th for the 2009 Griswold Tee Ball League for kids in grades kindergarten-2nd, ages 5-8 years old. Practices and games will be at the Griswold Youth Sports Complex. Practices will be held July 6, 8, 13th, and 15th with games on July 20th, 22nd, and 24th. Registration fee is $20 which includes a league t-shirt. Registration forms are available at Elliott City Hall, Griswold City Hall, Lewis City Hall, on website at www.griswold.k12.ia.us . WEDNESDAY, JULY 8

A Relay for Life project where cancer survivors receive 10% off all Silpada jewelry with all profits going to the American Cancer Society will take place from 4-8 at Jan Highfill's home at 800 Plum St. in Atlantic. For more information call 243-4786.

The Audubon Public Library presents author Shirley Damsgaard at 7 pm at the Cultural Center.

 

FRIDAY, JULY 10

Griswold's 127th Old Soldiers Reunion July 10-12th. Friday at 8 am tractors leave for a 30 mile tractor ride and parade at 6 pm. In the park there will be face paintings & tattoos, food stands, bingo, reunion queen contest, entertainment, quilt auction and an ice cream social. Also in the park is a dunk tank & bounce houses by the Junior class. At noon, men and women's pedal tractor pull, ages 12 & up.

Casey Fun Days July 10th & 11th. Friday night there is a Bagg-o tournament at the fire station at 6:30 pm.

Atlantic "Nine & Wine" Golf event at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club, 5-pm to midnight. 9-holes of golf w/a wine sampling and appetizer at every hole. Live entertainment and more wine to follow. Fore more information, call 243-3017 or visit www.atlanticiowa.com

 

SATURDAY, JULY 11

Due to the growing interest in aronia berries, the Rural Development Resource Center will hold a free workshop on marketing your product on July 11th. For more information call 712-623-5521.

Griswold's 127th Old Soldiers Reunion activities continue on Saturday July 11th with the pancake man from 7-11 am at the fire station. Also in the morning is an antique tractor & implement show, antique tractor pull, kids water fights in the park, horseshoe contest at 10:30 am and at 11 am a 4 person scramble at Griswold Golf & Country Club.The grande parade starts at 6, with entertainment in the park-"Griswold's Got Talent", and street dance at 9 with band "Flashback"

Casey's Fun Days continues on Saturday July 11th starting with a flag raising ceremony at 8 am, kids parade at 9. There will be kids activities, big parade at 10:30, Methodist Church lunch at 11:30, kids pedal pull, Junior class car wash fundraiser and sand volleyball tournament at noon. From 12-1 there is a cake walk, then kids games and water fights in the big park. From 3-4 at the Community building "Are you smarter than an Adair/Casey boy's basketball player?", then dinner from 5:30-7:00 pm and bingo. Dance at 9 pm with "Stone Thro" at the fire station.

 

SUNDAY, JULY 12

Atlantic First United Methodist Church, Vacation Bible School starts at 5:15 until 8:15 pm from Sunday-Thursday. There will be a light supper provided, along with bible stories, songs, games and crafts. Thursday night is the family program at 7 pm. All ages 3 through entering 6th grade are welcome. Cost is $10 per family, call Pam at 243-4185 for more information or registration.

Last day for Griswold's 127h Old Soldiers Reunion is July 12th. From 7-10 am, Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church will be serving biscuits and gravy with free will donation.Cass County Museum is open from 1-4 pm. Duck race at 2:30 at the river bridge, get your tickets Friday & Saturday at the Legion booth.

The annual Humphrey Memorial Golf Tournament will be held July 12th at the Nishna Hills Golf Club in Atlantic. It's a 4 person best ball and 18 holes beginning at 9 am. $100 entry fee with 80% payback, $1000 hold in one prize on #13. You can phone names and cart reservations to Nishna Hills Golf Club at 712-243-9931. Lunch will be available. Proceeds go towards the Humphrey Memorial Scholarship.

 

WEDNESDAY, JULY 15

Summer concert series at the Danish Windmill Stage in Elk Horn. Loren Christensen a soloist & guitarist will entertain the audience with his music. There is a farmer's market starting at 6 pm, and live music starting at 7 pm.

 

FRIDAY, JULY 17

Jesse James/Chuckwagon Days in Adair July 17th & 18th. There will be sidewalk sales, sidewalk chalk art contest, youth sand volleyball tournament, ice cream social, fire department water fights, chamber meal from 6:30 - 8 pm, and from 9-11 pm 176 dueling piano show.

 

SATURDAY, JULY 18

Jesse James/Chuckwagon Days continue in Adair. At 7 am there is a fun run/walk, sand volleyball tournament, food stands, car show and shine, kids games, parade at 4, fire department dinner at 5:30, and dance at 9 pm.

CASS Incorporated is hosting the CASS Classic/Mitch Trewet Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday July 18th at the Nishna Hills Golf Club. The 4-person best ball tournament will start at 10 am and is $160 per team. All proceeds go to CASS Incorporated's mission of enriching lives, every day. Cass County Beef Producers and Hy-Vee will be serving lunch and there will be a silent auction in the clubhouse throughout the day. You can register your team by calling 243-9931 or if you would like to sponsor a hole or donate to the silent auction call Tami at 243-2668.

 

MONDAY, JULY 20

"Laugh-In" at the EE Warren Opera House in Greenfield at 3, 5 and 7 pm, with free will donation.

 

EXTRAS .... 

Exira's Farmer Market will be until September 25th, with NO market on July 3rd from 5-7 pm on the east side of the city park. Vendors of all sorts are needed, call 304-4221.

Adair County 4-H'ers who ordered t-shirts can pick them up at the Extension office. While there you can make State Fair entries which are due July 1st, and Adair County Fair entries are due July 6th, and also sign up for the Clover Run on July 4th in Fontanelle.

Reading Buddies at the Atlantic Public Library where Atlantic Does volunteer to listen to kids read to them will be from June 11th - July 16th from 11-noon. Kids can show up the days that work and bring the book their reading or choose one from the library.

The 2nd Annual Shelby County 4-H Bucket of Junk contest has begun. Ten buckets with similar items are ready for pick up at the Shelby County Extension Office. Contestants can clean, sand, glue, cut, weld, bolt, bend, fasten, shape, paint or finish the items in any way. There is a $20 deposit for each bucket, which will be returned to the contestant when it is delivered to the Shelby County Fair on July 16th. Winner for People's Choice, where the number of pennies dropped in your bucket that sits by your sculpture will receive all the pennies in the bucket and $50. The Judge's Choice category will be judging each piece on creativity, use of materials, and craftsmanship and will receive a $50 Shelby County Chamber of Commerce gift certificate.

The Greenfield Public Library's Family Storyteller Program will be held on Thursday nights until July 9th for children 3-5 years old. Each session will run from 6-7 pm. Each child must attend with at least one adult family member. There is no cost and free child care for siblings is available on site. Pre-registration is needed, call 743-8412.

Acts are needed for Thrivent's Got Talent Show on July 4th at the Exira City park at 2:30 pm. Also, craft vendors and home-based businesses are needed for Exira's Fall Festival Craft Fair on September 26th. Contact Joan Shaffer at 712-268-2789 or email jshaffer@metc.net for details.

Avoca Rotary Club "CHAIR"ity silent auction will be open for bids until July 4th. The chairs,stools, and rockers will be displayed at area businesses. Final bidding will be from 2-7 pm during Avoca's Independence Day Celebration. You can also bid online and see all the creations at www.cityofavoca.com. Twenty-nine trophies still need sponsors for the 2009 Adair County Fair which is July 22-26. Please contact the Adair County Extension Office at 641-743-8412 to become a trophy donor. The donor's name will be engraved on the trophy.

The local Head Start is now taking application for the 2009-2010 school year. Head Start is a Preschool program for 3-5 year olds. Program services include education, health, nutrition, disability, and family support which are provided free of charge. Call or visit your local Head Start center to fill out an application. If you need help locating a center near you please call 1-800-698-5886.

The 2009 Iowa Cash Rent Survey is now available at the Adair County Extension office in Greenfield along with other county extension offices. The publication summarizes results of a survey concerning typical cash rental rates for high, medium, and lowa quality cropland, as well as land devoted to hay production, oats, and pasture. Copies of the survey results are free. They survey results can also be found on the Adair County Extension homepage at www.extension.iastate.edu/adair

Support group for people with Parkinson's disease and their family, caregivers or befrienders is held the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 1-3 pm in the Commons room of Summerset Estates, the condos in the north end of the 3rd street in Fontanelle. Sharing the Bounty - A free meal for the needy will be held the 1st Wednesday of the month from 5:30 - 6:30 pm at SS Peter & Paul Parish Center In Atlantic All ages are welcome.

The Eagles will have a country dance the first Friday of every month this summer.

The Atlantic Lions Club takes used eye glasses and hearing aids. You can drop them off at these Atlantic locations: Hy-Vee, W & S Appliance, Fareway, or any Lions Club member.
